What’s Included in These Free Letter N Coloring Page Worksheets?

Letter N Coloring Page Worksheets

This free printable set includes five Letter N coloring pages featuring familiar words and pictures that help children connect the letter N with its beginning sound.

Each worksheet includes:

  • A large uppercase N and lowercase n to color
  • A fun picture representing a word beginning with N
  • A dotted sentence for tracing
  • A space for children to write their names
  • Bold, easy-to-color outlines for little hands

Here’s a closer look at the five coloring pages included in the download.

1. N Is for Nest Coloring Page

The first worksheet features a bird’s nest filled with eggs next to a large uppercase N and lowercase n.

Children can color the nest, decorate the eggs, and trace the sentence “Nn is for nest.”

This is a wonderful worksheet to pair with a spring theme, bird activities, or a lesson about animal homes.

You can also talk about how birds build nests and why they need safe places to lay their eggs.

2. N Is for Nurse Coloring Page

This Letter N worksheet features a friendly nurse wearing a nursing cap and stethoscope.

Children can color the nurse and practice tracing “Nn is for nurse.”

I like this worksheet because it gives parents and teachers an opportunity to introduce community helpers while practicing alphabet skills.

You can extend the activity by talking about how nurses help people stay healthy and care for those who are sick or injured.

3. N Is for Net Coloring Page

Next is a fun coloring page featuring a net.

Children can color the uppercase and lowercase N, decorate the net, and trace the sentence “Nn is for net.”

This worksheet is great for introducing new vocabulary and talking about different types of nets, such as fishing nets, butterfly nets, and sports nets.

You can even encourage children to find other objects around the house or classroom that begin with the letter N.

4. N Is for Nose Coloring Page

This Letter N coloring page features a large picture of a nose alongside the uppercase N and lowercase n.

Children can color the picture and trace “Nn is for nose.”

It’s also a great opportunity to introduce the five senses!

Ask children what they use their noses for and encourage them to name different things they can smell, such as flowers, cookies, or fresh fruit.

5. N Is for Necklace Coloring Page

The final worksheet features a necklace with round beads and a heart-shaped charm.

Children can color the beads in different colors, decorate the necklace, and trace the sentence “Nn is for necklace.”

You can turn this into a simple patterning activity by encouraging children to color the beads in an AB or ABC pattern.

For example, they could color the beads red, blue, red, blue, or choose three colors to create a repeating pattern.

This is a fun way to add early math practice to an alphabet coloring activity!

Why I Love Using Letter N Coloring Pages for Alphabet Learning

Learning the alphabet involves more than memorizing letter names. Children also need opportunities to recognize letters, connect them with sounds, and develop the fine motor skills needed for writing.

That’s why I love creating alphabet coloring worksheets that combine several early learning skills into one simple activity.

These Letter N worksheets can help children practice:

Uppercase and Lowercase Letter Recognition

Each worksheet includes a large uppercase N and lowercase n.

Seeing both letters together helps children begin recognizing the different forms of the same letter.

Encourage children to point to each letter, say its name, and identify whether it’s uppercase or lowercase.

Beginning Sound Awareness

Each picture introduces a word that begins with the letter N.

The letter N makes the /n/ sound, as heard at the beginning of words such as nest, nurse, nose, net, and necklace.

As children color, encourage them to say each word aloud and listen for the beginning sound.

You can also ask them to think of other words beginning with N, such as:

  • Night
  • Nap
  • Nut
  • Nine
  • Notebook
  • Nail
  • Newt
  • Noodles

Fine Motor Skill Development

Coloring is a fun way for children to strengthen the small muscles in their hands and fingers.

These muscles are important for activities such as writing, cutting, buttoning clothing, and using everyday tools.

The large bubble letters and simple illustrations give young learners plenty of room to practice coloring while developing hand control.

Early Handwriting Practice

Each printable includes a dotted sentence beginning with “Nn is for…”

Children can trace the letters while practicing pencil control and becoming familiar with written words.

For children who aren’t ready to trace the entire sentence, simply have them color the picture and point to the letter N.

You can always revisit the tracing activity as their skills develop.

Fun Ways to Use These Letter N Worksheets

One of my favorite things about printable alphabet activities is how easily they can fit into different learning routines.

You don’t need an elaborate lesson plan or a long list of supplies to make these worksheets useful.

Here are a few simple ways to incorporate them into your preschool or kindergarten activities.

Letter of the Week Activities

If you’re teaching one letter each week, these coloring pages are an easy way to introduce the letter N.

You could use one worksheet each day, focusing on a different N word throughout the week.

For example:

  • Monday: N is for Nest
  • Tuesday: N is for Nurse
  • Wednesday: N is for Net
  • Thursday: N is for Nose
  • Friday: N is for Necklace

Each day, review the letter name, practice its sound, and introduce the new vocabulary word.

Preschool and Kindergarten Morning Work

These printable worksheets make great morning activities because they’re simple to prepare and don’t require complicated directions.

Just print the pages, provide crayons or colored pencils, and let children get started.

They’re also useful for independent work, early finishers, and quiet learning time.

Alphabet Centers

Add these worksheets to your alphabet or literacy center along with magnetic letters, alphabet cards, or letter tracing activities.

Children can identify the letter N, say its sound, and color the matching picture.

For additional practice, have them build the letter N using magnetic letters or playdough before completing their coloring page.

Create a Letter N Alphabet Book

Another fun idea is to turn the finished worksheets into a little alphabet book.

Once children have colored all five pages, staple them together or place them in a folder.

They’ll have their own Letter N book featuring five different N words!

Encourage children to flip through the pages, name each picture, and practice saying the beginning sound.

Letter N Activities to Extend the Learning

If you’d like to add a few hands-on activities to your letter of the week lessons, there are plenty of easy ways to reinforce the letter N without spending a lot of time preparing materials.

Go on a Letter N Scavenger Hunt

Invite children to look around the house or classroom for objects that begin with N.

You might find a notebook, napkin, necklace, or newspaper.

For objects that aren’t available, use pictures or flashcards instead.

As children find each item, encourage them to say the word and listen for the /n/ sound.

Practice Building the Letter N

Give children playdough, craft sticks, or building blocks and encourage them to create uppercase and lowercase N.

Uppercase N can be made with three straight craft sticks.

For lowercase n, playdough is especially useful because children can bend it into a curved shape.

This is a great hands-on alternative to traditional handwriting practice.

Sort Letter N Pictures

Gather pictures of objects that begin with N and a few that begin with other letters.

Ask children to sort the pictures into two groups:

  • Begins with N
  • Does not begin with N

This activity helps develop beginning sound awareness and encourages children to listen carefully to spoken words.

Make a Necklace Pattern

Pair the N is for Necklace worksheet with a simple necklace-making activity.

Children can use large beads and a child-safe cord to create repeating patterns.

For younger children, you can substitute paper circles and glue them onto a drawn necklace shape.

This combines letter recognition with color identification, counting, and early patterning skills.

Picture Books to Pair With Letter N Worksheets

Reading picture books is another wonderful way to reinforce alphabet learning.

I always recommend pairing printable activities with books whenever possible because stories help children connect new vocabulary with meaningful experiences.

Here are a few picture books that work well with the letter N.

The Napping House by Audrey Wood

This delightful story follows a group of sleepy characters who pile onto a cozy bed for a nap.

It’s a wonderful book for introducing the N word “nap” while practicing sequencing and predicting what might happen next.

After reading, ask children to recall the order in which the characters joined the bed.

The Best Nest by P. D. Eastman

This classic story follows Mr. and Mrs. Bird as they search for the perfect place to build a nest.

It pairs beautifully with the N is for Nest coloring page.

You can extend the story by talking about where birds live and what materials they use to build nests.

Night in the Country by Cynthia Rylant

This beautifully illustrated picture book explores the sights and sounds of nighttime in the countryside.

It’s a lovely choice for introducing the word “night” and encouraging children to listen for beginning sounds.

After reading, talk about the differences between daytime and nighttime.

Not a Box by Antoinette Portis

This imaginative story shows how an ordinary cardboard box can become something extraordinary through pretend play.

It’s a fun choice for exploring the word “not” and encouraging creativity.

You can even provide an empty cardboard box and invite children to imagine what it could become.

Easy Paper Plate Nest Craft for Letter N

If you’re looking for a simple hands-on activity to pair with these Letter N coloring pages, a paper plate nest craft is a fun choice!

This craft works especially well with the N is for Nest worksheet and can also be incorporated into spring, bird, or animal habitat lessons.

Children can create their own little bird’s nest using a paper plate, construction paper, and a few basic craft supplies.

Supplies Needed for the Paper Plate Nest Craft

  • One paper plate
  • Brown paint or brown crayons
  • Brown construction paper
  • White or pastel-colored construction paper
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Glue stick or school glue
  • Paintbrush (if using paint)
  • Pencil
  • Optional: Small strips of brown tissue paper for additional texture

How to Make a Paper Plate Nest Craft

Step 1: Color or Paint the Paper Plate

Start by coloring or painting the paper plate brown.

This will become the base of the bird’s nest.

If you’re using paint, allow the plate to dry completely before moving on.

Step 2: Cut Out the Nest Shape

With adult assistance, cut the paper plate in half.

Use one half of the plate as the nest base.

Step 3: Add Nest Materials

Cut or tear brown construction paper into thin strips.

Glue the strips across the front of the paper plate to make it look like a nest made from twigs.

Encourage children to overlap the strips to create texture.

Step 4: Create the Bird Eggs

Draw three simple oval shapes on white or pastel-colored construction paper.

Have children cut out the eggs and decorate them with crayons if they’d like.

Step 5: Glue the Eggs Into the Nest

Arrange the eggs so that they peek out from behind the top edge of the paper plate nest.

Glue the lower portion of each egg to the back of the plate so the eggs appear to be sitting inside the nest.

Step 6: Display the Finished Letter N Craft

Once the glue has dried, your paper plate nest craft is complete!

You can display the finished craft alongside the N is for Nest coloring page or add it to a letter of the week bulletin board.

For additional learning, ask children to count the eggs, describe their colors, or explain why birds build nests.
