Why I Love Using Letter M Coloring Worksheets for Early Learning
Coloring pages might seem like a simple activity, but they can provide valuable opportunities for early childhood learning.
I believe alphabet coloring worksheets are especially helpful because they allow children to practice several important skills without making learning feel overwhelming.
Building Uppercase and Lowercase Letter Recognition
Before children can confidently read and write, they need opportunities to recognize letters in different forms.
These worksheets feature both uppercase M and lowercase m in large, easy-to-see letters.
As children color, you can encourage them to identify each letter, say its name, and practice making its sound.
Repeating this process across different pictures helps reinforce letter recognition.
Strengthening Beginning Sound Awareness
Learning to connect letters with their sounds is an important part of early literacy development.
Each coloring page introduces a familiar word beginning with the letter M.
For example:
- M is for monkey.
- M is for mouse.
- M is for mug.
- M is for mitten.
- M is for moon.
Encourage children to say each word aloud and listen for the /m/ sound at the beginning.
You can also exaggerate the beginning sound slightly by saying “mmm-monkey” or “mmm-moon” to help children hear it.
Developing Fine Motor Skills
Coloring and tracing provide opportunities for children to develop the small hand muscles needed for writing.
As children hold crayons, stay within the coloring areas, and follow dotted tracing lines, they’re practicing hand control and coordination.
The large letters are especially helpful for preschoolers who are still developing confidence with coloring tools.
Encouraging Creativity and Independence
One of my favorite things about printable coloring worksheets is how easily they can be adapted for different learners.
Some children might enjoy coloring the entire page, while others may prefer focusing on the letters and pictures.
There is no need to rush through every worksheet in one sitting.
You can introduce one letter M coloring page each day or let children choose their favorite picture.
How to Use These Free Letter M Worksheets

These printable letter M worksheets are easy to incorporate into your existing homeschool or classroom routine.
You don’t need complicated supplies or extensive preparation. Simply print the worksheets, gather a few coloring tools, and you’re ready to begin.
Here are a few ways I recommend using them.
Letter of the Week Activities
If you’re teaching one letter each week, these worksheets make a wonderful addition to your letter M lesson plans.
Start by introducing the uppercase and lowercase M, demonstrate the /m/ sound, and show children pictures of objects beginning with that letter.
Then, choose one worksheet to complete each day.
By the end of the week, children will have practiced recognizing the letter M through five different vocabulary words.
Preschool Literacy Centers
Add these letter M coloring worksheets to your literacy centers for an independent or small-group activity.
Place the printed pages in a basket with crayons or colored pencils.
Children can choose a picture, color the letters, and practice tracing the sentence.
These activities are especially useful for reinforcing skills you’ve already introduced during group lessons.
Kindergarten Morning Work
Looking for something simple to add to your morning routine?
These no-prep letter M worksheets make an easy morning work activity.
Students can begin their day by coloring, identifying letters, and practicing early handwriting skills.
Because the instructions are simple, children who are familiar with the routine may be able to complete the activity with minimal assistance.
Homeschool Alphabet Lessons
Homeschool families can use these worksheets alongside alphabet books, letter crafts, and hands-on learning activities.
I recommend introducing the letter and its sound before handing out the worksheet.
Then, talk about the picture together and encourage your child to identify other words that begin with M.
For an extra challenge, have children practice writing uppercase M and lowercase m on a separate sheet of paper.
Create a Letter M Alphabet Book
Another fun idea is to turn the completed worksheets into a mini alphabet book.
Once children finish coloring all five pages, staple them together or place them in a small folder.
Encourage children to flip through their book, identify each picture, and practice saying the words.
This is a simple way to review beginning sounds while giving children something they’ve created themselves.
Fun Letter M Activities to Extend the Learning
Although these worksheets are designed to be simple and easy to use, you can make your letter M lessons even more engaging by adding a few hands-on activities.
Letter M Scavenger Hunt
Challenge children to find objects beginning with the letter M.
You might look for a marker, magnet, mug, or mitten.
For each object, say its name aloud and emphasize the beginning sound.
You can also encourage children to draw pictures of the objects they find.
Build the Letter M
Give children playdough, craft sticks, or other age-appropriate manipulatives and encourage them to build uppercase and lowercase M letters.
This hands-on activity provides another opportunity to explore letter formation.
After building the letters, children can practice tracing M and m with their fingers.
Letter M Picture Sorting
Gather pictures of objects that begin with M and a few that begin with other letters.
Ask children to sort the pictures into two groups:
- Begins with M
- Does not begin with M
This activity helps children practice listening for beginning sounds while developing early sorting and classification skills.
Make a Letter M Sensory Tray
Fill a shallow tray with a thin layer of sand, salt, or another suitable sensory material.
Demonstrate how to form uppercase M and lowercase m using your finger.
Then, encourage children to practice making the letters themselves.
This can be a fun alternative to pencil-and-paper handwriting practice.
Picture Books to Pair With Letter M Worksheets
I love recommending picture books alongside printable activities because stories provide another opportunity to introduce vocabulary, encourage conversations, and reinforce early literacy skills.
Here are a few wonderful books that pair nicely with these letter M coloring pages.

This beloved picture book follows a mouse whose simple request for a cookie leads to a series of increasingly funny events.
It pairs perfectly with the M is for Mouse coloring page.
After reading, encourage children to identify the mouse and talk about what happens throughout the story.

Three curious white mice discover jars of paint and begin experimenting with colors.
This is a wonderful book to pair with your mouse coloring worksheet, especially if you’re also working on color recognition and color mixing.
Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow
This playful counting story is a great companion for the M is for Monkey coloring page.
Children can practice counting backward, identifying monkeys, and joining in with the repeated phrases.
The Mitten by Jan Brett
This beautifully illustrated winter story follows several animals as they squeeze inside a lost mitten.
Pair it with the M is for Mitten worksheet for a winter-themed alphabet lesson.
You can also encourage children to identify the animals and practice retelling the story in order.
Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me by Eric Carle
This imaginative picture book is a wonderful choice for the M is for Moon coloring page.
The story introduces children to the moon through beautiful illustrations and a sweet father-daughter adventure.
After reading, encourage children to talk about the moon’s shape and draw their own nighttime sky.

How to Make a Paper Plate Monkey Craft
Step 1: Paint the Paper Plate
Begin by painting the front of a plain paper plate brown.
Set it aside and allow the paint to dry completely before adding the facial features.
Step 2: Cut Out the Monkey’s Ears
Using brown construction paper, cut out two large rounded ears.
Cut two smaller tan circles or ovals for the inside of the ears.
Glue the tan pieces onto the brown ears.
Step 3: Create the Monkey’s Face
Cut a large rounded heart-shaped face piece from tan construction paper.
Then, cut an oval muzzle from the same paper.
The face should fit comfortably inside the paper plate, leaving some of the brown plate visible around the edges.
Step 4: Add the Eyes, Nose, and Mouth
Use black construction paper or a black marker to create two eyes, a small nose, and a smiling mouth.
You can also use googly eyes if you prefer.
Step 5: Assemble Your Monkey
Glue the ears behind the paper plate so they extend from both sides.
Attach the tan face and muzzle to the front of the plate.
Finally, add the eyes, nose, and mouth.
Step 6: Practice the Letter M
Once the craft is finished, encourage children to say “M is for monkey!”
You can also display the completed monkey next to the M is for Monkey coloring worksheet.
More Ways to Use Your Monkey Craft
Turn your finished monkey into a fun alphabet learning activity by asking children to name other words that begin with M.
You could also attach a craft stick to the back of the plate and use the monkey as a puppet during storytime.
For a classroom display, hang the finished monkeys alongside your letter M worksheets and create a colorful letter-of-the-week bulletin board.

Tips for Printing Your Letter M Coloring Worksheets
Before getting started, here are a few simple printing tips to help you get the most out of your worksheets.
Use regular printer paper for everyday activities. Standard 8.5 x 11-inch printer paper works well for coloring and tracing.
Choose cardstock for sturdier pages. If you plan to use the worksheets repeatedly or turn them into an alphabet book, cardstock can provide extra durability.
Print in black and white. These worksheets are designed with black outlines, making them easy to print without using colored ink.
Laminate for repeated practice. If you want children to practice tracing more than once, consider laminating the pages or placing them inside reusable dry-erase pockets.
Keep extra copies available. Some children may enjoy coloring the same picture more than once, especially when practicing different colors or tracing skills.
