Free Letter L Worksheets for Preschool and Kindergarten

Sharing is caring!

Learning the alphabet is much more fun when children can connect each letter with familiar pictures and words. I created these free Letter L worksheets to give preschool and kindergarten children a simple, hands-on way to practice recognizing uppercase and lowercase L while learning several words that begin with the letter L.

This free printable set includes five Letter L coloring pages featuring a lion, ladybug, lemon, leaf, and lamp. Each page also includes a large uppercase L, lowercase l, and a simple tracing sentence so children can practice several early literacy and fine motor skills on one page.

These pages are easy to add to a Letter of the Week lesson, alphabet center, homeschool preschool activity, morning work, or a quiet learning activity at home.

Free Letter L Worksheets for Preschool and Kindergarten

I designed these Letter L coloring pages to keep alphabet practice simple and approachable for young learners.

Rather than filling the page with too many activities at once, each worksheet focuses on the letter L and one beginning-sound picture. Children can color the large letters and picture, say the word aloud, and trace the sentence along the bottom.

The repeated layout also gives children a familiar routine as they work through the different pages. Once they understand what to do on the first worksheet, they can complete the others more independently.

These Letter L worksheets for preschool and kindergarten can help children practice:

  • Uppercase L recognition
  • Lowercase l recognition
  • Letter-sound association
  • Beginning sounds
  • Vocabulary
  • Pencil control
  • Pre-writing skills
  • Tracing
  • Coloring and fine motor skills

You do not have to use all four worksheets at once. They can easily be spread throughout the week as part of a Letter L theme.

What’s Included in the Free Letter L Worksheets?

This free printable set contains four Letter L coloring worksheets.

L is for Lion

L is for lion coloring page

Children can color the large uppercase L, lowercase l, and lion before tracing the sentence “Ll is for lion.”

The lion gives children an easy, recognizable L word to associate with the letter sound.

L is for Ladybug

L is for ladybug coloring page

The second worksheet features a cute ladybug alongside uppercase and lowercase L.

Children can color the ladybug and letters and then trace “Ll is for ladybug.”

This page would be especially fun to use during a spring, insect, or garden theme.

L is for Lemon

L is for lemon coloring page

Next is a lemon-themed Letter L coloring page.

Children can color the lemon and letters before tracing “Ll is for lemon.” You can also use this page to talk about the color yellow, fruits, and the sour taste of lemons.

L is for Leaf

L is for leaf coloring page

Children can color the leaf and uppercase and lowercase L before tracing “Ll is for leaf.”

This worksheet is especially fun for fall, but it can also be paired with nature, tree, plant, or spring activities.

L is for Lamp

L is for lamp coloring page

The final worksheet features a lamp for another everyday object that begins with the letter L.

Children can color the lamp and large uppercase and lowercase letters before tracing “Ll is for lamp.”

You can extend this page by asking children to look around the classroom or home for a lamp or other objects that give us light. Then see if they can hear the /l/ sound at the beginning of both lamp and light.

How to Use These Letter L Coloring Pages

One of the things I love about simple alphabet coloring worksheets is how easily they can be adapted for different learners.

For a younger preschooler, the activity can be as simple as identifying the letter and coloring the picture. You might point to the uppercase and lowercase letters and say their names together.

Children who are ready for beginning sounds can name the picture and listen for the /l/ sound at the beginning of the word.

Kindergarten children can add the tracing sentence at the bottom for extra handwriting practice.

You can also ask simple questions while children work:

“What letter do you see?”

“What sound does L make?”

“What is this picture?”

“Does lion begin with L?”

“Can you think of another word that starts with L?”

This turns a coloring worksheet into a quick phonics conversation without making the activity feel like a test.

Make a Letter L Word List

After completing the worksheets, see how many additional Letter L words children can think of.

You could write the words on a whiteboard, chart paper, or a piece of paper as children brainstorm.

Try words such as lamp, lamb, lake, ladder, lollipop, lemon, lion, leaf, ladybug, log, lunch, lock, light, and leg.

For younger children, emphasize the beginning sound as you say each word.

“L-l-l-lion.”

“L-l-l-leaf.”

“L-l-l-lamp.”

Hearing the sound repeatedly helps children connect the printed letter with the sound it represents.

Turn Your Letter L Worksheets Into a Letter of the Week Lesson

You do not need an elaborate lesson plan to teach one letter of the alphabet.

I believe combining a few different types of activities gives young learners a chance to experience the same letter in several ways without making the lesson repetitive.

For a simple Letter L lesson, start with one of the free Letter L worksheets, read a picture book featuring an L word, look for the letter L around the room, and finish with a hands-on craft.

You can also place magnetic letters in a sensory bin and ask children to find uppercase L and lowercase l.

Another easy idea is a Letter L hunt. Look through books, food packages, classroom labels, or magazines and see how many Ls children can spot.

Picture Books to Pair With Letter L Worksheets

A picture book is an easy way to add vocabulary and read-aloud time to an alphabet lesson. You don’t necessarily need a book specifically about the alphabet. Books featuring familiar L words work wonderfully, too.

Here are a few Letter L book ideas:

Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen
This is a fun choice because both library and lion begin with L.

The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle
Pair this story with the L is for Ladybug worksheet for an insect-themed lesson.

The Lion Inside by Rachel Bright
A sweet lion story that pairs naturally with the L is for Lion coloring page.

Leaves by David Ezra Stein
This works nicely with the leaf worksheet, particularly if you are teaching Letter L during the fall.

Lemons Are Not Red by Laura Vaccaro Seeger
This colorful picture book is a fun match for the L is for Lemon worksheet and can also introduce color concepts.

You could read one book each day and complete a different Letter L activity afterward.

Letter L Paper Plate Lion Craft

Lion paper plate craft

A paper plate lion craft would be a great hands-on activity to pair with these free Letter L worksheets because children will already see a lion on one of the coloring pages.

The paper plate can become the lion’s face, while strips of construction paper create its mane.

Supplies

You will need a paper plate, yellow or tan paint, paintbrush, yellow, orange, or brown construction paper, child-safe scissors, glue, and a black marker or crayon.

You can also use printed template pieces for the eyes, ears, nose, and other facial features if you want to make the craft easier for preschoolers.

How to Make a Paper Plate Lion

Paint the paper plate yellow or tan and allow it to dry completely.

Cut strips of yellow, orange, and brown construction paper for the mane. Children can glue the strips around the back edge of the plate so they extend outward around the lion’s face.

Add two ears near the top of the plate.

Next, glue on the eyes and nose and add the lion’s mouth and whiskers.

For another fine motor activity, children can curl some of the paper strips around a pencil before attaching them. This creates a wavy mane and gives little fingers extra practice.

Once the lion is finished, display it beside the L is for Lion worksheet for a complete Letter L project.
