Learning the alphabet becomes much more inviting when children can color, trace, and connect each letter with familiar words. I created these free Letter K coloring page worksheets to give preschool and kindergarten learners a simple, no-prep way to practice uppercase K, lowercase k, beginning sounds, and early handwriting skills.
This free set includes five Letter K coloring pages featuring kitten, koala, kite, king, and kangaroo. Each worksheet combines a large uppercase and lowercase K with a picture to color and a traceable “Kk is for…” sentence. Free Letter K Coloring Page Wor…

Skills Children Can Practice With Letter K Coloring Pages
Although these pages look like simple coloring activities, they give young learners several opportunities to practice important early literacy and fine motor skills.
Uppercase and Lowercase Letter K Recognition
Each worksheet displays a large uppercase K beside a lowercase k. Seeing both forms repeatedly can help children begin recognizing that K and k represent the same letter.
You can also encourage children to point to each letter before coloring:
“Show me the big K.”
“Can you find the little k?”
This adds a quick letter-recognition activity without requiring another worksheet.
Letter K Beginning Sounds
Each coloring page introduces a word beginning with K:
- K is for kitten.
- K is for koala.
- K is for kite.
- K is for king.
- K is for kangaroo.
As children color, parents and teachers can emphasize the beginning /k/ sound.
Try saying each word slowly together and asking children what sound they hear at the beginning. You can then brainstorm other K words, such as key, kid, kitchen, and kick.
Early Handwriting Practice
At the bottom of each worksheet is a dotted “Kk is for…” sentence for children to trace.
For preschoolers who are still developing pencil control, tracing provides gentle handwriting practice without asking them to form an entire sentence independently.
Kindergarten children who are ready for an extra challenge can trace the sentence and then try writing the featured K word on the back of the page.
Fine Motor Practice Through Coloring
Coloring those big bubble letters and pictures also gives little hands plenty of fine motor practice.
Children can use crayons, colored pencils, or washable markers to decorate the letters. You could even turn the large K and k into a mini art activity by filling them with torn pieces of paper, stickers, dot markers, or small tissue-paper squares.
Easy Ways to Use These Free Letter K Worksheets

One reason I enjoy creating simple alphabet printables is their flexibility. You don’t need an elaborate lesson plan to make them useful.
For a homeschool Letter K lesson, you might begin by introducing uppercase and lowercase K, read a picture book featuring a K word, complete one coloring page, and finish with a hands-on activity or craft.
In a classroom, the worksheets can be added to:
- Letter of the Week lessons
- Literacy centers
- Morning work
- Independent practice
- Early-finisher activities
- Alphabet binders
- Sub plans
- Take-home practice
You certainly don’t need to use all five pages in one sitting. Preschool children may benefit more from choosing one page at a time and revisiting Letter K throughout the week.
Make a Letter K Word Wall
You can extend these Letter K coloring page worksheets with a simple K word wall.
Start with the five words from the printable set: kitten, koala, kite, king, and kangaroo. As children think of additional K words, write or draw them on small cards and add them to your wall.
For younger children, pairing each written word with a picture can make the activity more meaningful.
At the end of the week, point to different pictures and ask children to name them. This provides another opportunity to hear and identify the beginning K sound.
Letter K Picture Books to Read Together
A picture book can turn a simple alphabet worksheet into a fuller Letter K lesson. Look for books featuring kittens, kangaroos, koalas, kites, or other K-themed subjects.
A few fun possibilities include:
Kitten’s First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes
A sweet choice for pairing with the K is for kitten coloring page.
Katy No-Pocket by Emmy Payne
A classic kangaroo story that pairs naturally with the kangaroo worksheet.
Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too? by Eric Carle
A colorful animal story that can lead to conversations about kangaroos and other animals.
Koala Lou by Mem Fox
A lovely choice to pair with the K is for koala worksheet.
The King of Kindergarten by Derrick Barnes
This one works especially well with the K is for king page and can also be a fun beginning-of-the-year read.
You don’t have to find a book specifically about the letter K. Choosing a story connected to one of the vocabulary words gives children another opportunity to hear and use that word in context.
Add a Simple Letter K Paper Plate Craft

After coloring and tracing, a hands-on craft gives children another way to explore the Letter K.
A paper plate koala craft would be especially cute with this set.
Paper Plate Koala Supplies

How to Make a Paper Plate Koala
Paint the paper plate gray and allow it to dry completely.
Cut two large round ears from gray construction paper. Add smaller white circles or fluffy white paper pieces inside the ears, and glue them behind the top sides of the plate.
Next, cut a large oval nose from black construction paper and glue it near the center of the koala’s face.
Add two eyes above the nose. Children can finish their koala by drawing a small mouth with a black marker.
You could display the finished koalas alongside the Kk is for koala worksheet for an easy Letter K bulletin board or alphabet display.
