I created these free letter H worksheets to give preschool and kindergarten learners a simple, hands-on way to practice recognizing uppercase and lowercase H while building beginning letter-sound skills.
This printable set includes four Letter H coloring pages featuring a hive, hand, heart, and house, plus an adorable hat page. Each worksheet also includes large uppercase and lowercase H letters for coloring and a simple sentence children can trace.
These pages are easy to add to a letter-of-the-week lesson, alphabet center, homeschool activity, morning work, or quiet-time learning.
Free Letter H Worksheets for Early Learners
Letter worksheets don’t need to be complicated to give children meaningful alphabet practice. For young learners, repeating the same letter in several different ways can help them become more familiar with its shape, sound, and use in words.
With these free printable letter H worksheets, children can practice several early learning skills on one page. They can identify uppercase H and lowercase h, say the name of the picture, listen for the /h/ sound, color the picture and letters, and trace the sentence underneath.
I kept the layout consistent throughout the set so children know what to expect each time they move to a new page.

H Is for Hive
Children can color the large uppercase H and lowercase h along with the beehive picture. At the bottom of the worksheet, they can trace:

H Is for Hand
The hand coloring page provides an easy H word that preschoolers are likely to recognize immediately.
Children can color the hand and letters before tracing:

You can also turn this page into a quick movement activity by asking children to hold up a hand, wiggle their fingers, clap, or trace an H in the air.
H Is for Heart
The heart page gives children another familiar word beginning with H. They can color the striped heart, practice identifying H and h, and trace:

This worksheet would fit nicely into Valentine’s Day activities, a feelings theme, or a lesson about kindness.
H Is for House
The house worksheet features a simple house scene alongside uppercase and lowercase H.
Children trace:

Try asking children what makes the /h/ sound at the beginning of house. You can then brainstorm other things they might find around a house that begin with different letters.
H Is for Hat
The final worksheet features a winter-style hat for children to color.
The tracing sentence reads:
Hh is for hat
This page works particularly well for winter alphabet practice, although it can easily be used any time of year.
Skills Children Can Practice With Letter H Coloring Pages
Although these pages look like simple coloring worksheets, they can support several important preschool and kindergarten skills at the same time.
Children can practice:
- Uppercase and lowercase Letter H recognition
- Beginning sound awareness
- Letter-sound association
- Vocabulary development
- Pencil control
- Prewriting and handwriting skills
- Fine motor development
- Coloring within defined spaces
Coloring the oversized H and h also gives children extra time to look at the shapes of the letters. Instead of seeing the letter for only a few seconds on a flashcard, they are interacting with it as they color.
The dotted sentences add another layer of fine motor and handwriting practice without turning the activity into a full handwriting worksheet.
How to Use These Free Printable Letter H Worksheets
One of the easiest ways to use these worksheets is to introduce one page at a time.
Start by showing children the uppercase H and lowercase h. Say the letter name together and demonstrate its sound. Then point to the picture and emphasize the first sound:
“Hhh…hat.”
“Hhh…hand.”
“Hhh…house.”
Children can repeat the word, color the picture and letters, and finish by tracing the sentence.
For preschoolers who are still developing pencil control, the coloring portion can be the main activity. Tracing can be introduced when they are ready.
Kindergarten students can take the activity a little further. After finishing a worksheet, ask them to think of another word that begins with H. They could draw their word on the back of the page or try writing it independently.
Turn Your Letter H Worksheets Into a Beginning Sound Hunt
A beginning sound hunt is an easy way to extend the activity without preparing another worksheet.
After completing one of the Letter H worksheets, ask children to look around the classroom or home for objects beginning with H.
Some H words you might introduce include:
hair, hammer, hamburger, hamster, hand, hanger, happy, hat, heart, helicopter, hen, hippo, hive, horse, hospital, hot, house, and hug.
Not every word needs to represent an object children can physically find. Pictures, toys, books, and classroom decorations can become part of the hunt too.
For younger children, provide two or three objects and ask which one starts with the /h/ sound. Older children can try generating their own H-word list.

Picture books can help children hear Letter H words naturally while connecting alphabet practice with stories.

This cheerful story makes a natural companion to the H is for Hat worksheet while also opening conversations about friendship and feelings.

Pair this book with the H is for House coloring page and talk about the many different kinds of homes described throughout the story.
The Honeybee by Kirsten Hall
This beautifully illustrated book pairs especially well with the H is for Hive page and can extend your alphabet activity into a simple bee or nature lesson.
The Happy Book by Andy Rash
Use this story to introduce another important H word: happy. Children can talk about things that make them happy and draw their answers.
Books don’t necessarily need an H theme to support letter learning. Another option is to choose a favorite picture book and challenge children to listen for words beginning with H as you read.
Make a Paper Plate Horse Craft for Letter H
A paper plate horse craft would make a fun hands-on activity to pair with these free Letter H worksheets.
After children spend time coloring and tracing, a craft gives them another way to explore an H word while practicing cutting, gluing, and fine motor skills.
Supplies for a Paper Plate Horse Craft
You will need:
- Paper plate
- Brown paint or crayons
- Brown construction paper
- Black construction paper or yarn
- Scissors
- Glue
- Black marker
- Googly eyes or paper eyes
How to Make a Paper Plate Horse
- Color or paint the paper plate brown and allow it to dry if using paint.
- Cut two horse ears from brown construction paper.
- Cut a long muzzle shape from brown construction paper in a slightly lighter or darker shade if available.
- Glue the ears behind the top of the plate.
- Glue the muzzle toward the bottom of the plate.
- Add the eyes above the muzzle.
- Use strips of black construction paper or short pieces of yarn to create the horse’s mane.
- Draw two nostrils and a simple mouth with a black marker.
- Once the horse is finished, practice saying the word slowly together: hhh-horse.
The completed craft can be displayed alongside the Letter H worksheets or added to an alphabet wall.
