More Community Helper Activities

There are many other community helpers that your child can learn about and explore through various activities. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Crafts

  • Have your child make a police officer badge out of construction paper and decorate it with markers or stickers.
  • Create a firefighter hat using red construction paper, and add yellow tissue paper for the flames.
  • Use cardboard boxes, paint, and markers to create a pretend post office. Your child can play mail carrier and deliver letters to different “addresses” around the house.

Games

  • Play “doctor” by setting up a pretend doctor’s office with stuffed animals as patients. Your child can use a toy stethoscope and bandages to give their patients check-ups.
  • Have your child be in charge of sorting and delivering the mail in a game of “post office.” They can also practice writing letters and addressing envelopes.
  • Set up a pretend grocery store using empty food containers. Your child can use play money and practice counting while “shopping.”

In addition to these fun and educational activities, another way to introduce children to different community helpers is through books. Here are a few recommended picture books that feature various community helpers:

“Whose Hat is This?: A Look at Hats Workers Wear – Hard, Tall, and Shiny” by Sharon Katz Cooper – This interactive book allows children to guess which community helper wears each type of hat while also learning about their jobs.
