Learning the alphabet is an exciting milestone for little learners, and I believe that combining coloring with letter recognition is a wonderful way to make learning fun! These free Letter O coloring page worksheets are perfect for helping preschoolers and kindergarten students recognize uppercase and lowercase O while practicing tracing, coloring, and beginning letter sounds.
I created these five printable alphabet coloring pages featuring adorable pictures of an octopus, orange, owl, otter, and ostrich. Each worksheet gives children an opportunity to explore the letter O through hands-on learning while developing important early literacy and fine motor skills.
Whether you’re a homeschooling parent looking for simple alphabet activities or a teacher planning your next letter-of-the-week lesson, these free printables are an easy, no-prep addition to your learning routine.
What’s Included in These Free Letter O Coloring Page Worksheets?

I designed these Letter O coloring worksheets to make alphabet learning simple, engaging, and fun for young children. Each printable includes a large uppercase O, a lowercase o, a picture beginning with the letter O, and a dotted sentence for tracing.
The five worksheets included are:
1. O Is for Octopus Coloring Page
This adorable octopus coloring page is a fun way to introduce children to the letter O while exploring ocean animals.
Children can color the octopus, decorate the uppercase and lowercase O, and trace the sentence “Oo is for octopus.”
I think this worksheet would be a wonderful addition to an ocean-themed preschool unit. You could even encourage children to count the octopus’s eight arms for a little extra math practice!
2. O Is for Orange Coloring Page
This Letter O worksheet features a juicy orange, complete with a leaf and orange slice.
Children can practice recognizing the letter O while coloring the fruit and tracing the sentence “Oo is for orange.”
I love how this worksheet can connect alphabet learning with everyday objects. You could bring a real orange into your lesson, let children observe its color and shape, and talk about how the word orange begins with O.
3. O Is for Owl Coloring Page
This cute owl coloring worksheet is perfect for combining alphabet practice with a woodland animal theme.
Children can color the owl, practice identifying uppercase and lowercase O, and trace the sentence “Oo is for owl.”
For an additional learning opportunity, you can introduce a few fun facts about owls, such as how many species are active at night and how their large eyes help them see in low light.
4. O Is for Otter Coloring Page
This sweet otter coloring page features an otter floating in the water.
Children can color the otter and the surrounding water while practicing letter recognition and tracing the sentence “Oo is for otter.”
This worksheet would be a fun addition to an animal habitat lesson. You can talk about where otters live, what they eat, and how they use their paws to hold food.
5. O Is for Ostrich Coloring Page
The final worksheet features an ostrich, a fascinating bird known for its long legs and impressive running speed.
Children can color the ostrich, identify the letter O, and trace the sentence “Oo is for ostrich.”
I think this is a wonderful opportunity to introduce children to animals they may not see every day. You could also compare ostriches with other birds and discuss how ostriches have wings but cannot fly.
Why I Love These Letter O Coloring Worksheets for Early Learning
Coloring worksheets are more than just a fun activity to keep children busy. When thoughtfully designed, they can help build several important early learning skills.
Here are a few reasons I believe these free Letter O coloring pages are a great addition to preschool and kindergarten lessons.
Builds Uppercase and Lowercase Letter Recognition
Each worksheet features a large uppercase O and lowercase o, giving children repeated opportunities to recognize both forms of the letter.
Encourage children to point to each letter and say its name before beginning to color.
Since uppercase and lowercase O have similar shapes, this is also a great letter for introducing the concept of capital and lowercase letters.
Introduces Beginning Letter Sounds
The pictures on each worksheet help children connect the letter O with familiar words.
Octopus, orange, otter, ostrich, and owl all begin with O, although they don’t all begin with the same vowel sound.
For example, octopus, otter, and ostrich begin with the short O sound, while orange and owl may have different beginning vowel sounds depending on pronunciation.
I recommend starting with octopus, otter, and ostrich when practicing the short O sound, then using the other pictures to explore how vowels can make different sounds.
Encourages Fine Motor Development
Coloring and tracing are wonderful activities for strengthening the small muscles in children’s hands.
As children color the pictures, they practice holding crayons, controlling their movements, and staying within outlines.
Tracing the dotted sentences also gives them opportunities to develop pencil control and become more comfortable with early handwriting.
Supports Vocabulary Development
Each worksheet introduces an O word that can spark conversation and curiosity.
Children can learn about ocean animals, birds, fruits, and animal habitats while building their vocabulary.
I especially like activities that allow parents and teachers to extend learning beyond the worksheet with simple discussions, books, and hands-on experiences.
How to Use These Free Letter O Coloring Page Worksheets

One of the best things about these printable alphabet worksheets is how easy they are to incorporate into different learning environments.
You don’t need an elaborate lesson plan or expensive materials. A few basic supplies and a little creativity are all you need.
Supplies Needed
- Printed Letter O coloring page worksheets
- White printer paper or cardstock
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Pencil for tracing
- Optional: Construction paper, glue, and scissors for displaying finished pages
For everyday coloring and tracing, regular printer paper works well. If you plan to use paint or turn the worksheets into crafts, cardstock is a sturdier option.
Step 1: Introduce the Letter O
Begin by showing children the uppercase and lowercase letter O.
Say the letter name together and demonstrate how to form it by drawing a large circle in the air.
You can also have children use their fingers to trace the shape of the letter on a table or in a tray of sand.
Step 2: Practice the Beginning Sound
Choose one of the worksheets and introduce the picture.
For example, if you’re using the octopus coloring page, say the word octopus slowly and emphasize the beginning sound.
Ask children to repeat the word and identify the first sound they hear.
Step 3: Color the Letter and Picture
Let children use their favorite coloring supplies to decorate the uppercase O, lowercase o, and accompanying picture.
You can encourage them to use realistic colors or allow them to get creative with their own color combinations.
The goal is to make learning enjoyable while giving children plenty of opportunities to practice their fine motor skills.
Step 4: Trace the Sentence
Once children finish coloring, encourage them to trace the dotted sentence at the bottom of the page.
Younger preschoolers may need help holding their pencils or following the dotted letters.
For kindergarten students who are ready for an additional challenge, you can have them copy the sentence onto a separate sheet of paper.
Step 5: Review the Letter O
Finish the activity by asking children to identify the letter O and name the picture they colored.
You can also review the other Letter O words from the printable set to reinforce letter recognition and vocabulary.
Fun Letter O Activities to Extend Learning
If you’re planning an entire Letter O lesson or alphabet-themed week, there are plenty of simple activities you can pair with these coloring worksheets.
Go on a Letter O Hunt
Invite children to search for the letter O in books, magazines, alphabet charts, or around the classroom.
They can circle the letter O on a printed page or point it out whenever they see it.
For an additional challenge, ask children to find both uppercase and lowercase O.
Make an Orange Counting Activity
Use a real orange to combine alphabet learning with math and sensory exploration.
Ask children to describe the orange’s color, shape, and texture.
You can also peel the orange and count the segments together.
This activity provides a simple way to connect the letter O with counting, observation, and everyday experiences.
Create an O Word Picture Chart
Make a large letter O on a piece of construction paper.
Have children draw or cut out pictures of objects and animals beginning with O.
Some ideas include an octopus, owl, otter, orange, ostrich, ocean, and ox.
Display the completed chart near your alphabet learning area for additional practice throughout the week.
Practice Letter O With Playdough
Playdough is a fun hands-on way to practice letter formation.
Have children roll the dough into long pieces and connect the ends to create uppercase and lowercase O shapes.
You can also encourage children to make little oranges or an octopus using the playdough.
Letter O Picture Books for Preschool and Kindergarten
Pairing alphabet worksheets with picture books is one of my favorite ways to create meaningful learning activities. Reading aloud helps children hear new vocabulary, explore different topics, and develop a love of books.
Here are a few picture books that would pair nicely with these Letter O coloring pages.
An Octopus Is Amazing by Patricia Lauber
A nonfiction book that introduces children to the fascinating world of octopuses. Pair it with the octopus coloring worksheet to explore ocean animals.
A sweet story about three baby owls waiting for their mother. This is a lovely choice to read before completing the owl coloring page.
Otters Love to Play by Jonathan London
Introduces children to playful otters and their lives in the wild. Pair this book with the otter coloring worksheet.
Flora and the Ostrich and Lark by Marilyn Nelson
A beautifully illustrated story featuring an ostrich and a lark, perfect for introducing children to this unusual bird.
Easy Paper Plate Octopus Craft for Letter O

To make your Letter O lessons even more engaging, I recommend pairing the octopus coloring worksheet with a simple paper plate octopus craft.
This hands-on activity allows children to explore ocean animals while practicing cutting, gluing, counting, and creativit

- Cut the tentacles. Cut eight long strips from purple construction paper. Younger children may need assistance.
- Curl the tentacles. Wrap each strip loosely around a marker to create curled tentacles, or fold the strips back and forth for a fun accordion effect.
- Attach the tentacles. Glue all eight paper strips to the back of the paper plate so they extend below the octopus’s face.
- Add the face. Glue two googly eyes onto the plate and draw a happy smile with a black marker.

For additional alphabet practice, have children write an uppercase O and lowercase o on a small piece of paper and attach it to their finished craft.
