If you are planning a woodland animal, fall, or letter H theme, these free hedgehog worksheets are an easy way to add a little learning to the day without a mountain of prep. I created this printable set for preschool and kindergarten children to practice early literacy, handwriting, fine motor skills, and basic animal vocabulary with one very cute, very prickly little theme.
The activities are simple enough to use at home, in a homeschool lesson, or in the classroom. You can use the entire set together for a hedgehog-themed learning day or choose just one or two worksheets to add to your current lesson plans.
Free Hedgehog Worksheets for Preschool and Kindergarten
Hedgehogs make such a fun theme for young learners because you can connect them with several different topics. These worksheets can fit into a woodland animals unit, forest theme, fall lesson, letter H week, or even a broader animal study.
I also designed the activities with different early learning skills in mind. Instead of giving children several pages that practice the exact same thing, the set combines letter recognition, handwriting, tracing, cutting and pasting, and vocabulary.
That makes it easy to choose activities based on the skills your child or students are currently working on.
Whatās Included in the Free Hedgehog Worksheets?
This free printable set includes four learning activities, along with a cover page. Hedgehog Worksheets
Letter H Hunt

Children search through the circles to find the lowercase letter h, then dab or color each correct letter.
This activity is a simple way to work on letter recognition and visual discrimination. You can have children use crayons, markers, or dot markers to cover each H they find.
For extra practice, ask children to say the /h/ sound each time they find the letter.
H Is for Hedgehog Handwriting Worksheet

This worksheet introduces uppercase H and lowercase h and gives children space to trace and practice writing the letters.
I think pairing handwriting practice with a picture and vocabulary word helps make letter learning more meaningful. Instead of practicing an isolated letter over and over, children can make the connection between H, hedgehog, and the beginning /h/ sound.
Hedgehog Line Tracing Worksheet

On this page, children trace the dotted lines inside the hedgehog picture and then trace the word hedgehog at the bottom.
Tracing activities are especially useful for preschoolers because they provide fine motor practice before children are expected to form letters independently.
After tracing the lines, children can color their hedgehog to turn the worksheet into a simple coloring activity too.
Label the Hedgehog Cut-and-Paste Worksheet

Children cut out the vocabulary words and paste them beside the correct parts of the hedgehog.
The parts included are:
- eye
- spines
- foot
- nose
- ear
I included both a black-and-white and color version of the hedgehog labeling activity. The black-and-white version gives children an additional opportunity to color, while the color page works nicely when you want a ready-to-use activity.
Skills Children Can Practice With Hedgehog Worksheets
Although these pages have an adorable woodland theme, there is plenty of learning tucked between those spines.
Children can practice recognizing uppercase and lowercase H, making the /h/ beginning sound connection, tracing letters and words, strengthening pencil control, using scissors and glue, following directions, and learning basic hedgehog body-part vocabulary.
For preschool children, I would focus more on exposure and fine motor practice than perfectly formed handwriting. Kindergarten students may be ready to spend more time independently writing H and h and reading some of the vocabulary words.
How to Use These Free Hedgehog Printables

You don’t have to turn these worksheets into a full lesson to make them useful. One page can easily become a quick morning activity, literacy center, homeschool warm-up, or early-finisher task.
For a more complete hedgehog lesson, start by reading a picture book about hedgehogs or woodland animals. Then talk about a few real hedgehog characteristics before completing one of the worksheets.
You could use the activities over several days, too. Try the letter hunt one day, handwriting the next, and save the labeling worksheet for after children have learned a little more about hedgehogs.
The line tracing page works particularly well as a quiet-time or fine motor activity.
Turn the Hedgehog Worksheets Into a Letter H Lesson
These printables also fit naturally into a Letter H theme.
Start by showing children uppercase H and lowercase h. Say the word hedgehog slowly and emphasize the beginning sound.
Then have children complete the H is for hedgehog handwriting page followed by the letter hunt.
You can extend the activity by brainstorming other H words together, such as hat, house, horse, heart, and hand. Children can draw one of their favorite H words on the back of the worksheet.
For preschoolers, simply hearing and identifying that beginning sound is valuable practice. Kindergarten students can take it a step further by trying to write some of the H words.
Hedgehog Books to Read With Your Worksheets
A picture book can turn a few printable pages into a much richer woodland animal lesson. Look for books that introduce real hedgehogs as well as stories featuring hedgehog characters.
A few books to consider are:
The Very Helpful Hedgehog by Rosie Wellesley
A sweet story that works nicely for conversations about friendship and helping others.
Hedgehugs by Steve Wilson and Lucy Tapper
Horace and Hattie are two hedgehogs trying to figure out how hedgehogs can hug without all those prickly spines getting in the way.
The Snowy Nap by Jan Brett
Hedgie decides he doesn’t want to hibernate and discovers exactly what he has been missing during winter.
The Hat by Jan Brett
Another Hedgie story that is especially fun during a winter or woodland animal theme.
For a science-focused lesson, you can also choose a nonfiction children’s book about hedgehogs and use it before completing the Label the Hedgehog worksheet.
Make a Paper Plate Hedgehog Craft

After finishing the hedgehog worksheets, add a hands-on art project with a simple paper plate hedgehog.
You will need a paper plate, brown paint, paintbrush, construction paper or cardstock, scissors, glue, and the printable hedgehog craft pieces.
Paint the paper plate brown and allow it to dry completely. Add paper spines around the back portion of the plate, then attach the face, nose, ear, eye, and feet. Children can make their hedgehogs unique by choosing different shades of brown or adding a few fall leaves around them.
The finished hedgehog makes a cute classroom display when paired with the children’s worksheets.
