Looking for a fun and creative Halloween activity that gets kids excited about crafting and writing? This Disguise a Ghost craft is a fun way to let children use their imaginations while practicing important early learning skills!
I created these free printable Disguise a Ghost worksheets to give kids a chance to transform an ordinary little ghost into something completely different. Will their ghost become a pirate, princess, pumpkin, or maybe even a firefighter?
With several adorable disguises to choose from, children can color, cut, paste, and create their very own ghost characters. I’ve also included a fun writing activity and a wanted poster that encourage kids to think creatively and tell a little story about their disguised ghosts.
This Halloween craft and writing activity is perfect for preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary students. Whether you’re planning Halloween classroom activities, looking for a creative homeschool project, or simply need a fun afternoon craft, these printables make it easy to combine creativity with learning.
And the best part? You can get started with just a few basic craft supplies!
What Is the Disguise a Ghost Activity?
The Disguise a Ghost activity is a creative Halloween craft where children help a friendly little ghost hide its identity by dressing it up as something else.
Instead of leaving their ghost looking like a ghost, kids get to choose a costume and give their character a completely new identity.
I love the idea of turning a simple Halloween craft into an activity that encourages children to make choices, solve problems, and express their creativity.
For example, a child might decide that their ghost wants to become a cowboy. They can color the cowboy hat and bandana, cut out the pieces, and glue everything onto their ghost.
Once their disguise is finished, they can complete the sentence:
“I’m not a ghost! I’m a ______!”
It’s a simple writing prompt that makes the activity especially fun for young learners who are beginning to build sentences.
Older children can take the activity further by creating a story about their ghost or completing the included wanted poster.
What’s Included in the Free Printable Disguise a Ghost Worksheets?
I created this printable pack with several options so parents and teachers can easily adapt the activity for different ages and skill levels.
1. Disguise a Ghost Craft Templates

The printable includes adorable ghost templates that children can decorate with their favorite disguises.
Each ghost has a friendly face and plenty of space for adding costume pieces.
I’ve included both black-and-white and partially colored ghost templates so you can choose the version that works best for your children or students.
The black-and-white version is especially fun for kids who enjoy coloring and adding their own creative touches.
2. Eight Fun Ghost Disguises
Children can choose from eight different ghost costumes:
- Pirate Ghost
- Cowboy Ghost
- Firefighter Ghost
- Police Officer Ghost
- Princess Ghost
- Mermaid Ghost
- Pumpkin Ghost
- Frankenstein Ghost
Each disguise includes printable costume pieces that children can cut out and attach to their ghosts.
The costume pieces are available in both color and black-and-white versions.
For a quick, low-prep Halloween activity, the colored pieces are a convenient option. If you want to include additional coloring practice, the black-and-white templates are a great choice.
Children can also mix and match pieces to create their own unusual ghost costumes!
3. “I’m Not a Ghost!” Writing Activity

Once children have finished disguising their ghosts, they can give their new characters an identity.
The ghost worksheet includes the sentence:
“I’m not a ghost! I’m a ______!”
Children complete the sentence by writing what their ghost is pretending to be.
For younger learners, this can be a simple one-word response such as “pirate” or “pumpkin.”
Kindergarten and first-grade students can practice writing their answers independently.
You can also encourage older students to expand their writing by answering questions such as:
- Why does your ghost need a disguise?
- Where is your ghost going?
- What is your ghost’s new name?
- How will your ghost keep its identity a secret?
These simple questions are a fun way to encourage storytelling and creative thinking.
4. Wanted: Ghost on the Run Writing Activity

One of my favorite additions to this printable pack is the Wanted: Ghost on the Run poster!
After children finish creating their disguised ghosts, they can imagine that their ghost is on the run and needs a wanted poster.
The printable includes spaces for:
- A picture of the ghost
- Name
- Last Seen
- Likes To
- Reward
I’ve included two versions of the wanted poster, including one with handwriting lines for younger writers.
Children can draw their disguised ghost in the picture space or cut out one of the matching ghost characters included in the pack.
They can then give their ghost a name, decide where it was last seen, and come up with a funny reward.
For example, a pumpkin ghost might have been last seen hiding in a pumpkin patch, while a pirate ghost could be searching for buried treasure!
This activity encourages children to use their imaginations while practicing descriptive writing and sentence formation.
5. Matching Ghost Characters

I’ve also included matching pictures of all eight disguised ghosts in both color and black-and-white versions.
These are perfect for children who would rather cut and paste a finished ghost onto their wanted poster instead of drawing their own.
You can also use these pictures for sorting, matching, or storytelling activities.
Supplies Needed for This Disguise a Ghost Craft
You won’t need anything fancy to make this Halloween craft. Most of the supplies are probably already in your classroom or craft cabinet.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Free printable Disguise a Ghost worksheets
- White cardstock or printer paper
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Child-safe scissors
- Glue stick or school glue
- Construction paper (optional, for displaying finished crafts)
I recommend printing the ghost and costume pieces on cardstock if you want a sturdier craft, especially if children will be displaying their finished ghosts around the classroom.
Regular printer paper works perfectly well, too!

How to Make Your Disguise a Ghost Craft
This is a simple cut-and-paste Halloween craft that children can complete in just a few steps.
Step 1: Choose Your Ghost Disguise
Start by printing the ghost template and letting children choose which disguise they want to create.
They can choose from the eight included costumes or get creative by combining different pieces.
If you’re working with younger children, I recommend offering just a few disguise options at a time so they can make their selections without feeling overwhelmed.
Step 2: Color the Ghost and Costume Pieces
If you’re using the black-and-white templates, have children color their ghosts and costume pieces.
Encourage them to use their favorite colors and add their own creative details.
For example, a princess ghost might have a purple dress and a golden crown, while a cowboy ghost could wear a bright red bandana.
If you’re using the colored templates, you can skip this step.
Step 3: Cut Out the Disguise Pieces
Carefully cut out the costume pieces along their outlines.
Younger children may need a little help cutting around smaller details.
This is a wonderful opportunity for kids to practice using scissors and develop their fine motor skills.
Step 4: Glue the Disguise onto the Ghost
Arrange the costume pieces on the ghost to see how they fit.
Once everything is in place, glue the pieces onto the ghost template.
Encourage children to think about where each piece belongs before gluing it down.
For example, the firefighter’s helmet belongs on top of the ghost’s head, while the jacket goes across its body.
Step 5: Give Your Ghost a New Identity
After the disguise is complete, have children finish the sentence:
“I’m not a ghost! I’m a ______!”
They can write the name of their chosen disguise on the line.
This is also a great time to invite children to share their finished ghosts and explain why they chose their costumes.
Step 6: Complete the Wanted Poster
For an additional writing activity, print the Wanted: Ghost on the Run worksheet.
Children can draw their ghost or cut and paste a matching disguised ghost from pages 16 or 17 of the printable pack.
Then, they can complete the remaining sections by giving their ghost a name, choosing where it was last seen, describing something it likes to do, and creating a reward.
When everyone has finished, display the wanted posters together for a fun Halloween classroom bulletin board.
Educational Benefits of This Halloween Ghost Craft
While this Disguise a Ghost activity is designed to be fun, it also gives children opportunities to practice several important early learning skills.
Fine Motor Skills
Coloring, cutting, and gluing help children strengthen the small muscles in their hands.
These movements support the hand coordination children need for handwriting and other everyday tasks.
Creativity and Imagination
Choosing a costume and creating a new identity encourages children to think creatively.
There isn’t just one correct way to disguise a ghost, which gives kids the freedom to make their own decisions and personalize their projects.
Early Writing Skills
The sentence-completion activity gives beginning writers a manageable way to practice putting their ideas into words.
The wanted poster provides an additional challenge for children who are ready to write more independently.
Language Development
Talking about the disguises encourages children to describe clothing, colors, occupations, and characters.
You can extend the activity by asking children to explain what their ghosts are wearing and why they chose their costumes.
Following Directions
Completing the craft helps children practice following a sequence of steps.
They learn to choose, color, cut, arrange, glue, and write as they work toward finishing their projects.

Fine Motor Activity
The black-and-white costume pieces are perfect for practicing coloring, cutting, and gluing.
For preschool students, you can precut some of the smaller pieces to make the activity easier.
Halloween Bulletin Board
Turn your classroom into a collection of silly disguised ghosts!
Display the finished crafts under a heading such as:
“These Ghosts Are in Disguise!”
You can also create a wanted poster display with the title:

Homeschool Halloween Activity
If you’re homeschooling, this is an easy activity to add to your Halloween-themed learning plans.
You can complete the craft one day and save the wanted poster writing activity for another day.
This allows children to enjoy the project without having to complete everything in one sitting.
Halloween Picture Books to Pair with Your Disguise a Ghost Craft
Pairing a craft with a picture book is a wonderful way to bring a seasonal theme into your reading time.
Here are a few Halloween picture books that would go nicely with this activity.
The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt by Riel Nason
This sweet story follows a little ghost who feels different from the other ghosts because he’s made from a quilt instead of a sheet.
It’s a lovely choice for talking about individuality and accepting differences.
After reading, children can discuss how their disguised ghosts are different from one another.
Ghosts in the House! by Kazuno Kohara
This charming Halloween picture book follows a little girl who discovers ghosts in her house and finds a clever way to deal with them.
Its playful ghost illustrations make it a fun companion for a ghost-themed craft.
The Hallo-Wiener by Dav Pilkey
This funny Halloween story follows a dachshund named Oscar who wears an unusual costume.
It’s a great book for discussing costumes, kindness, and how appearances can sometimes be deceiving.
After reading, ask children whether their disguised ghosts would fool anyone.
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson
This popular Halloween read-aloud follows a friendly witch and the animals who join her on a magical adventure.
It’s a wonderful addition to a Halloween-themed week filled with books, crafts, and creative writing activities.
Tip: You can find these Halloween picture books on Amazon and add them to your classroom library or seasonal read-aloud collection.
More Fun Halloween Activities to Try with Your Ghost Disguise Craft
If you’re planning a full Halloween-themed lesson, there are several easy ways to extend this activity.
Create a Ghost Disguise Parade
Once everyone has finished their ghosts, invite children to show off their creations.
Each child can introduce their ghost by saying:
“I’m not a ghost! I’m a ______!”
This is a fun way to encourage speaking and listening skills.
Play Guess the Ghost Disguise
Have one child describe their disguised ghost without saying what costume it’s wearing.
For example:
“My ghost wears a hat and has a badge. My ghost helps keep people safe.”
The other children can guess which disguise is being described.
Write a Silly Ghost Story
Encourage older children to create a short story about their ghost.
They can explain why their ghost needed a disguise, where it went, and what happened next.
For children who need extra support, provide a sentence starter:
“One day, my ghost decided to dress up as a ______ because ______.”
Make a Ghost Craft Display
For an additional hands-on project, children can cut out their completed ghost characters and glue them onto colorful construction paper.
Add stars, pumpkins, or other Halloween decorations around the ghosts.
These finished projects make adorable seasonal decorations for a classroom, homeschool room, or refrigerator.
