Free Football Worksheets for Preschool and Kindergarten

Sharing is caring!

Are you looking for fun football worksheets to add to your preschool or kindergarten lesson plans? Whether you’re planning a football-themed learning week, celebrating the big game, or simply have a little football fan who loves everything about the sport, these free printable football worksheets are a fun way to combine learning with a favorite theme!

I created these football worksheets with young learners in mind, including activities that help children practice letter recognition, handwriting, vocabulary, and fine motor skills. They’re simple to prepare, easy to use, and perfect for homeschooling families, preschool classrooms, kindergarten centers, or a little extra learning at home.

The best part? You can download these football printables for free and have them ready to use in just a few minutes!

What’s Included in These Free Printable Football Worksheets?

I wanted to create a small collection of football-themed activities that would give children opportunities to practice several important early learning skills without feeling like they’re doing the same activity over and over again.

This free football worksheet packet includes four learning activities and a football-themed cover page that children can color and personalize.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s included!

1. F Is for Football Letter Tracing Worksheet

F Is for Football Letter Tracing Worksheet

Learning to recognize and write letters is an important part of early literacy development, and connecting letters to familiar objects can make practicing a little more meaningful.

This F is for football worksheet introduces children to uppercase F, lowercase f, and the word “football.”

Children can:

  • Color the uppercase and lowercase letters Ff.
  • Color the football illustration.
  • Trace the word “football.”
  • Practice tracing uppercase F.
  • Practice tracing lowercase f.
  • Build handwriting confidence through repetition.

I especially like how this activity combines letter recognition with handwriting practice. Rather than simply tracing a row of letters, children can connect the letter F with a football, giving them a visual reminder of its beginning sound.

Learning skills: Letter recognition, beginning sounds, handwriting, pencil control, and fine motor development.

2. Label the Football Player Worksheet

Label the Football Player Worksheet

This football labeling worksheet is a fun way to introduce children to football vocabulary while practicing early reading and matching skills.

Children will see an illustrated football player with arrows pointing to different parts of the player’s clothing and equipment.

They’ll cut out the provided vocabulary words and glue each one into the correct box.

The vocabulary words include:

  • Helmet
  • Jersey
  • Pants
  • Football
  • Shoes

For younger children who aren’t reading independently yet, I recommend reading the words aloud together before they begin. You can point to each item on the football player and talk about what it is used for.

This is also a wonderful opportunity to discuss why football players wear protective equipment, especially helmets.

Learning skills: Vocabulary development, word recognition, visual discrimination, matching, cutting, and gluing.

3. Football Helmet Line Tracing Worksheet

Football Helmet Line Tracing Worksheet

If you’re looking for football worksheets for preschoolers that help strengthen fine motor skills, this helmet tracing activity is a great choice.

Children will trace the dotted lines around a large football helmet, color the finished picture, and trace the word “helmet” at the bottom of the page.

Tracing activities give young learners an opportunity to practice controlling their pencils as they follow straight and curved lines.

I recommend encouraging children to trace slowly rather than rushing to finish. The goal is to develop control and coordination, not necessarily to create a perfectly traced picture.

After tracing, children can color the helmet using their favorite team’s colors or create their own football team design.

Learning skills: Fine motor coordination, prewriting, pencil control, concentration, and vocabulary.

4. Football Letter Hunt Worksheet

Football Letter Hunt Worksheet

Letter hunts are one of my favorite types of printable learning activities because they’re easy to prepare and can be used in several different ways.

In this football-themed letter hunt, children search for the lowercase letter g among a collection of other lowercase letters.

They can color or dab each circle containing the correct letter.

Here are a few ways to use this worksheet:

  • Color the letters: Have children use a crayon to color every circle containing the letter g.
  • Use dot markers: Children can dab the correct letters with a washable dot marker.
  • Try a letter hunt: Ask children to point to each letter g before coloring.
  • Count the letters: Once they’ve found them all, have children count how many they discovered.

This activity is especially helpful for practicing visual discrimination, which involves noticing similarities and differences between letters and shapes.

Learning skills: Letter recognition, visual discrimination, attention to detail, counting, and fine motor development.

5. Football Coloring Cover Page

Football Coloring Cover Page

I’ve also included a football-themed cover page featuring football players, a helmet, cleats, a jersey, a football, and other fun illustrations.

Children can color the pictures and write their names in the space provided.

You can use this page as a cover for their completed worksheets or as a standalone football coloring activity.

If you’re using these worksheets during a football-themed learning week, I think this is a fun way to introduce the theme before beginning the other activities.

Why Use Football Worksheets for Preschool and Kindergarten?

One thing I love about themed learning activities is that they give children a familiar subject to connect with while practicing important skills.

A child who enjoys football may be more interested in practicing handwriting when the worksheet features a football helmet or player.

Of course, children don’t need to know anything about football to enjoy these activities!

These free printable football worksheets introduce several foundational skills.

Early Literacy and Letter Recognition

Recognizing letters and connecting them with sounds are important steps toward learning to read.

The F is for football tracing page helps children practice identifying and forming the letter F, while the letter hunt encourages them to distinguish the lowercase letter g from other letters.

Fine Motor Skill Development

Tracing, coloring, cutting, and gluing all give children opportunities to develop coordination in their hands and fingers.

These skills support everyday classroom activities, including writing, drawing, and using scissors.

The helmet tracing worksheet is especially useful for practicing pencil control, while the football player labeling page adds cutting and pasting practice.

Vocabulary and Language Development

The football player labeling activity introduces words that children may hear during football games or conversations about the sport.

You can expand the activity by asking simple questions:

“What does a football player wear on their head?”

“Why do you think football players need helmets?”

“What do players wear on their feet?”

These conversations help children connect new vocabulary with familiar objects.

Learning Through Familiar Themes

Themed worksheets can be a simple way to make learning more interesting without having to plan an elaborate lesson.

Whether children are interested in football, animals, dinosaurs, or seasonal activities, connecting early learning skills to familiar subjects can encourage participation and curiosity.

How to Use These Football Worksheets at Home or in the Classroom

These football worksheets are designed to be flexible, so you can use them in whichever way works best for your children or students.

Football-Themed Preschool Learning Centers

Add the worksheets to a football-themed learning center along with crayons, pencils, glue sticks, and child-safe scissors.

You can place the activities in separate trays or folders and allow children to work through them at their own pace.

For the letter hunt, try adding dot markers to make the activity a little more interactive.

Kindergarten Morning Work

These football printables can also be used as part of your kindergarten morning work routine.

The letter tracing and helmet tracing activities are especially convenient because they require minimal preparation.

Simply print the pages, set out pencils or crayons, and let students get started.

Football-Themed Homeschool Activities

If you’re planning a football unit study or simply want to include your child’s interests in your homeschool lessons, these worksheets make a simple addition.

You could begin by reading a football-themed picture book, complete one or two worksheets, and finish with a hands-on football craft.

This creates a nice balance of reading, writing, and creativity without requiring a complicated lesson plan.

Super Bowl Classroom Activities

These free football worksheets are also a fun option for Super Bowl week!

You don’t have to focus on the actual teams playing. Instead, you can use the excitement surrounding football to introduce themed learning activities.

Children can design their own team colors, decorate football helmets, or create a pretend classroom football team.

You could even display their completed football worksheets on a bulletin board with a title such as “Our Learning Team!”

Early Finishers and Independent Work

If you need simple activities for students who finish their assignments early, the football coloring cover, tracing worksheet, and letter hunt are convenient choices.

I recommend keeping a few copies in an early finisher folder so they’re ready whenever you need them.

How to Print Your Free Football Worksheets

One of the things I try to keep in mind when creating printables is how much time parents and teachers already spend preparing activities.

These football worksheets are designed to be easy to print and use.

What you’ll need:

  • A printer
  • White printer paper (8.5 x 11 inches)
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Pencils
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Glue sticks
  • Dot markers (optional)

Printing instructions:

  1. Download the free football worksheets using the form near the bottom of this post.
  2. Open the PDF file on your device.
  3. Select the worksheets you want to print.
  4. Choose US Letter (8.5 x 11 inches) and print at actual size or 100% scale.
  5. Print in black and white.
  6. Gather your supplies and enjoy!

You can print the entire collection or choose individual pages depending on the skills your children or students are practicing.

For activities you plan to use repeatedly, consider placing the worksheets inside dry-erase pockets. Children can practice tracing with dry-erase markers, wipe the pages clean, and try again.

For the cut-and-paste labeling worksheet, regular printer paper works well.

Football Picture Books to Pair With These Worksheets

I love the idea of pairing printable worksheets with picture books because it gives children another way to explore a theme while developing listening comprehension and vocabulary.

If you’re planning a football-themed preschool or kindergarten lesson, here are a few books worth adding to your reading list.

Goodnight Football by Michael Dahl

Goodnight Football introduces young readers to the sights and excitement of a football game, from the stadium atmosphere to the players on the field.

This book is a fun choice for younger children who are just becoming familiar with football.

Activity idea: After reading, ask children to name football-related objects they remember seeing. Then complete the football player labeling worksheet.

My First Book of Football by Sports Illustrated Kids

My First Book of Football introduces children to the basics of football through illustrations and simple explanations.

It’s a helpful option for children who are curious about how the game works.

Activity idea: Talk about the equipment football players wear, then have children complete the helmet tracing and player labeling activities.

Dino-Football by Lisa Wheeler

If your children enjoy dinosaurs, Dino-Football is a fun way to combine two popular interests!

This playful picture book features dinosaur football teams competing on the field.

Activity idea: After reading, invite children to imagine their own football team. What would they name it? What colors would their uniforms be?

Little Granny Quarterback by Bill Martin Jr. and Michael Sampson

Little Granny Quarterback is a lively football-themed story featuring an unexpected player.

It’s a fun addition to a football reading collection, especially when you want to encourage imagination and discussion.

Activity idea: Ask children what makes someone a good teammate and encourage them to share ways they can help others.

You can find these football picture books at your local library or look for them on Amazon to add to your home or classroom collection.

How to Make a Paper Plate Football Craft

Step 1: Cut the football shape.

Start with a plain paper plate. Draw a large football shape across the center of the plate, making sure both ends come to a point.

Carefully cut along the outline to create an oval football shape with pointed ends.

Younger children may need adult assistance with this step.

Step 2: Paint the football brown.

Have children paint the front of their paper plate football using brown washable paint.

Set the plate aside and allow it to dry completely.

Step 3: Cut out the white football details.

Using white construction paper, cut two narrow strips for the end markings, one longer strip for the center lace, and several small strips for the cross laces.

Step 4: Glue on the football markings.

Glue the two end strips near the pointed ends of the football.

Next, glue the longer strip horizontally across the center.

Add the smaller strips across the center strip to create the football laces.

Step 5: Display your finished football craft!

Once the glue has dried, your paper plate football is ready to display.

Children can hang their finished crafts on a bulletin board, decorate a classroom football display, or take them home to show their families.

More Ways to Extend Your Football Craft Activity

If you want to turn this simple craft into a longer learning activity, here are a few ideas:

Practice counting: Have children count the small white strips they used to make the football laces.

Talk about shapes: Discuss the shape of a football and compare it with circles, rectangles, and other familiar shapes.

Explore colors: Ask children to identify the colors they used and name other objects that are brown or white.

Create a football display: Have each child make a football and add their name to the finished craft. Display them together to create a classroom football team.

More Fun Football Learning Activities for Preschool and Kindergarten

If your children are enjoying the football theme, you can extend the learning beyond the printable worksheets with a few simple activities.

Football Counting Practice

Cut several small football shapes from brown construction paper and write numbers on them.

Have children arrange the footballs in numerical order or match each number with the correct number of counters.

You can adjust the numbers depending on your child’s skill level.

Football Beginning Sounds Game

Gather pictures or small objects representing different beginning sounds.

Choose a letter and have children identify which objects begin with that sound.

For example, you could start with the letter F and use pictures of a football, fish, flower, and frog.

This activity pairs nicely with the F is for football tracing worksheet.

Football Team Color Sorting

Cut paper football jerseys from several colors of construction paper.

Have children sort the jerseys by color or create patterns using different colors.

For older preschoolers and kindergarten students, try creating simple AB or AAB patterns.

Design Your Own Football Jersey

Give children a blank piece of paper and invite them to draw their own football jersey.

They can choose a team name, number, and colors.

For an additional writing activity, encourage kindergarten students to write a sentence describing their jersey.
