Looking for a fun and hands-on way to help little learners practice spelling their names? This free Apple Tree Name Craft is a simple fall activity that combines name recognition, letter identification, and fine motor practice into one adorable craft! Kids will love creating their very own apple tree, complete with colorful apples that spell out their names.
I created this printable apple tree craft with preschoolers and kindergarteners in mind. It’s easy to prepare, requires just a few basic supplies, and gives children an opportunity to practice important early literacy skills while being creative.
Whether you’re planning an apple-themed preschool unit, looking for a fun back-to-school name activity, or adding hands-on learning to your fall lesson plans, this printable is a great addition to your activities.
What Is the Apple Tree Name Craft?

The Apple Tree Name Craft is a printable cut-and-paste activity that helps children practice recognizing, spelling, and building their names.
Each child creates an apple tree using the printable treetop and trunk templates. Then, they add apples with the letters of their name to the tree.
What makes this activity especially fun is that children get to personalize their craft! They can color their trees, choose their favorite apple colors, and arrange the letters of their names on the apples.
The finished apple trees also make a cute fall classroom display or a personalized decoration to take home.
What’s Included in the Free Apple Tree Name Craft Printable?

I’ve included everything you need to create this simple apple-themed name activity.
The printable PDF includes:
- Apple tree template: A large treetop and a separate tree trunk with grass details for children to color, cut, and assemble.
- Alphabet apple cutouts: Apples featuring uppercase letters A–Z, so children can find the letters needed to spell their names.
- Blank apple template: An extra apple for writing additional letters or personalizing the activity.
- Printable instructions: Easy-to-follow directions to help parents and teachers prepare and assemble the craft.
You can print additional copies of the apple alphabet page for names with repeated letters or to provide enough apples for a group of children.
Why Apple Tree Name Crafts Are Great for Preschool and Kindergarten
Learning to recognize and spell their own names is an important early literacy milestone for young children.
I love activities that give kids a chance to practice several skills at once without making learning feel like another worksheet.
This apple tree name activity does exactly that!
1. Builds Name Recognition and Spelling Skills
Children begin by finding the letters that make up their names. As they arrange the apples, they’re practicing recognizing letters and understanding the order in which those letters appear.
For children who are just beginning to recognize their names, you can provide a name card to use as a visual guide.
Older children can practice spelling their names independently.
2. Encourages Letter Recognition
The alphabet apple cutouts provide an opportunity to practice identifying uppercase letters.
As children search for the letters in their names, they become more familiar with the shapes and names of those letters.
You can also extend the activity by asking children to identify the first letter of their name or find other words that begin with the same letter.
3. Strengthens Fine Motor Skills
Coloring, cutting, and gluing are all wonderful activities for developing fine motor coordination.
Children use their hands and fingers to color the tree, carefully cut around the apples, and glue each piece into place.
These activities help strengthen the hand muscles and coordination needed for writing and other everyday tasks.
4. Encourages Creativity and Independence
One of my favorite things about printable crafts is that children can make each project their own.
Some children might choose bright red apples, while others may prefer green or yellow. They can also add extra details to their trees, such as flowers, clouds, or even little woodland animals.
Because the finished craft features their own name, children can feel a sense of accomplishment when they see their completed apple tree.
Supplies Needed for the Apple Tree Name Craft

You won’t need anything fancy to put this craft together. Most of the supplies are probably already in your home or classroom.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Free printable Apple Tree Name Craft template
- White cardstock or sturdy printer paper
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Child-safe scissors
- Glue stick or school glue
- Construction paper (optional, for mounting the finished craft)
I recommend using cardstock if you want the finished apple trees to be a little sturdier, especially if you’re planning to display them in your classroom.

How to Make the Apple Tree Name Craft
This fall name craft is easy to prepare and assemble, making it a great choice for preschool classrooms, kindergarten centers, or homeschool activities.
Step 1: Print the Apple Tree Name Craft Template

Start by downloading and printing the free Apple Tree Name Craft PDF.
The printable includes the treetop, tree trunk, and alphabet apples.
Print enough copies of the tree template for each child. You may also need additional copies of the apple alphabet page if children have repeated letters in their names.
Step 2: Color the Apple Tree

Have children color the treetop green, the trunk and branches brown, and the grass green.
They can use crayons, markers, or colored pencils.
Encourage them to take their time and make their tree as colorful as they’d like.
Step 3: Find and Color the Name Apples

Next, help children find the apples with the letters needed to spell their names.
They can color the apples red, green, yellow, or a combination of their favorite apple colors.
Have them color the leaves green and the stems brown.
If a child needs an additional letter, simply print another alphabet page or use the blank apple to write the missing letter.
Step 4: Write Their Name on the Tree Trunk
Have children write their names vertically down the tree trunk, starting at the top.
This gives them another opportunity to practice forming letters and spelling their names.
For younger children, you can lightly write their names in pencil first so they can trace over the letters.
Step 5: Cut Out the Tree and Apples
Carefully cut around the outlines of the treetop, trunk, and selected apples.
Younger children may need help cutting around the smaller apple shapes.
For children who are still developing their scissor skills, you can precut some of the pieces so they can focus on identifying and arranging their letters.
Step 6: Assemble the Apple Tree
Glue the treetop and trunk together, lining up the branches with the treetop.
Allow the glue to set before attaching the apples.
Step 7: Add the Name Apples
Have children arrange their apples in the correct order to spell their names.
Once they’re happy with the arrangement, they can glue the apples onto the treetop.
You can have children point to each letter and say its name as they glue it in place.
Step 8: Display the Finished Apple Tree Craft

Once the glue has dried, the Apple Tree Name Craft is complete!
Display the finished trees on a bulletin board, hang them around your learning space, or send them home for families to enjoy.

This printable is more than just a fall craft. There are several ways you can incorporate it into your preschool or kindergarten lessons.

For younger learners, consider preparing the pieces ahead of time to make the activity easier to complete independently.
Back-to-School Name Recognition Activity
The beginning of the school year is a wonderful time to introduce name recognition activities.
This apple name craft gives children a chance to practice identifying the letters in their names while creating something they can proudly display.
You can even turn the finished trees into a classroom bulletin board with a title such as “Our Class Is Growing!”
Apple-Themed Bulletin Board Display
Use the finished apple trees to decorate your classroom or homeschool learning space.
Each tree will be unique because it features a child’s name and individual coloring choices.
This makes a fun seasonal display that also celebrates each child’s growing literacy skills.
Name Letter Matching Game
Before gluing the apples onto the tree, turn the activity into a simple letter matching game.
Write each child’s name on a separate piece of paper and have them match the apple letters to the letters in their written name.
For an extra challenge, mix up the apples and ask children to put them back in the correct order.
Counting the Apples
You can also add a little math practice to this activity!
Have children count the number of apples needed to spell their names.
Ask questions such as:
- How many letters are in your name?
- How many apples are on your tree?
- Does your name have more or fewer letters than a friend’s name?
- How many red apples and green apples did you use?
This is a simple way to combine early math skills with literacy and crafting.
