Free Letter D Worksheets for Preschool and Kindergarten

Sharing is caring!

Are you looking for letter D worksheets to make learning the alphabet a little more fun? I created these free printable Letter D coloring worksheets to give preschool and kindergarten children an easy, engaging way to practice recognizing uppercase D and lowercase d while learning words that begin with the letter D.

This free set includes five adorable D-themed coloring pages featuring a duck, dog, dinosaur, donut, and doll. Each page also includes large uppercase and lowercase Dd letters to color and a simple sentence children can trace.

Whether you are working on a Letter of the Week curriculum, planning preschool literacy centers, homeschooling, or simply looking for a quiet educational activity, these free printables are easy to add to your alphabet lessons.

Free Printable Letter D Worksheets

Learning one letter at a time gives young children plenty of opportunities to become familiar with its shape, sound, and formation. These free Letter D worksheets combine several early literacy skills into one simple activity.

Instead of only coloring a picture, children can:

  • Identify uppercase D and lowercase d
  • Practice the /d/ beginning sound
  • Learn Letter D vocabulary
  • Trace simple sentences
  • Strengthen pencil control
  • Practice fine motor skills while coloring
  • Make connections between letters, sounds, and familiar objects

I especially like worksheets that can serve more than one purpose. You can introduce the letter, talk about the picture, practice the sound, trace the sentence, and finish with coloring without needing several separate activities.

What’s Included in the Free Letter D Worksheets?

I created five different Letter D coloring worksheets so children can practice the same letter with several beginning-sound pictures.

D Is for Duck Worksheet

The first printable features a cute duck alongside a large uppercase D and lowercase d. Children can color the letters and duck before tracing the sentence:

Dd is for duck.

This would be a fun page to use alongside a pond, farm, bird, or spring theme.

D Is for Dog Worksheet

Most young learners immediately recognize a dog, which makes it a great vocabulary word for introducing the /d/ sound.

Children can color the dog and large Dd letters before tracing:

Dd is for dog.

You could also ask children to name other animals and decide whether their names begin with D.

D Is for Dinosaur Worksheet

Dinosaurs have a magical ability to turn alphabet practice into something considerably more exciting.

This Letter D worksheet includes a dinosaur, uppercase D, lowercase d, and the sentence:

Dd is for dinosaur.

Pair this page with dinosaur toys or books and invite children to practice saying D, dinosaur, /d/.

D Is for Donut Worksheet

The donut coloring page provides another familiar Letter D word while giving children a fun picture to decorate.

Children can trace:

Dd is for donut.

They can also add their own colors to the frosting and sprinkles, making this a simple way to sneak a little creativity into letter practice.

D Is for Doll Worksheet

The final printable features a doll with large Dd letters and the tracing sentence:

Dd is for doll.

Together, the five worksheets expose children to several different words beginning with D instead of relying on a single vocabulary example.

Skills Children Can Practice With Letter D Worksheets

Alphabet worksheets may look simple, but they can support several important preschool and kindergarten skills at once.

Letter D Recognition

Children need plenty of exposure to both forms of a letter. Each worksheet prominently displays uppercase D and lowercase d, helping children become familiar with both.

Try asking:

“Can you point to uppercase D?”

“Where is lowercase d?”

“What letter do you see?”

You can also have children trace the large letters with a finger before coloring them.

Letter D Beginning Sounds

Duck, dog, dinosaur, donut, and doll all give children concrete examples of words beginning with D.

Say each word slowly and emphasize the first sound:

/d/ /d/ dog

Then invite children to repeat it.

You can extend the activity by brainstorming more D words together, such as:

  • Door
  • Drum
  • Deer
  • Desk
  • Dance
  • Dig
  • Dish
  • Dot

Pre-Writing and Handwriting Practice

Each printable includes a dotted sentence for children to trace. This gives beginning writers practice controlling their pencil and following letter shapes while reinforcing the featured D vocabulary word.

Children who are not ready for handwriting can still color the letters and pictures. The worksheets can easily be adapted for different skill levels.

Fine Motor Practice

Coloring and tracing help strengthen the small hand muscles children eventually use for writing, cutting, buttoning, and other everyday tasks.

Add crayons, colored pencils, or markers and let children choose how they want to complete each page.

How to Use These Letter D Worksheets

These worksheets are intentionally simple so you can fit them into the routines you already use.

For homeschool, you might introduce uppercase D and lowercase d, practice the letter sound together, and then choose one coloring page for independent work.

In the classroom, the pages can work well for:

  • Letter of the Week activities
  • Literacy centers
  • Morning work
  • Independent practice
  • Early finishers
  • Small groups
  • Preschool alphabet lessons
  • Kindergarten review
  • Take-home practice
  • Sub plans

You don’t have to complete all five worksheets at once. Spread them throughout your Letter D week so children encounter the letter repeatedly.

Turn the Letter D Coloring Pages Into a Letter Hunt

Here’s an easy extension that doesn’t require another printable.

After completing one of the Letter D worksheets, challenge children to look around the classroom or house for things beginning with D.

They might find a:

door, desk, doll, dish, dog toy, drawing, or dinosaur.

You can also gather several objects or picture cards and have children sort them into two groups: Begins With D and Does Not Begin With D.

That little extra step helps move the activity from simply recognizing a printed letter to listening for its sound in real words.

Letter D Books to Read Together

Picture books are an easy way to continue exploring Letter D vocabulary beyond a worksheet. Since this printable set includes dogs, ducks, dinosaurs, donuts, and dolls, there are plenty of themes you can explore.

A few books you might pair with your Letter D activities include:

After reading, ask children to listen for D words or identify the Letter D picture that matches the story.

Make a Paper Plate Dog Craft for Letter D

A paper plate dog craft would be a cute hands-on activity to pair with these Letter D worksheets.

After practicing “D is for dog,” children can make their own dog using a paper plate and a few basic craft supplies.

Paper Plate Dog Craft Supplies

You will need:

  • One 9-inch paper plate
  • Brown, tan, black, or gray washable paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Construction paper
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Glue
  • Black marker or crayon
  • Optional googly eyes

How to Make a Paper Plate Dog

  1. Paint the front of the paper plate and allow it to dry.
  2. Cut two floppy dog ears from construction paper.
  3. Cut out a round or oval muzzle.
  4. Cut a small black nose.
  5. Glue the ears behind the sides of the plate.
  6. Glue the muzzle toward the bottom center of the plate.
  7. Add the nose to the muzzle.
  8. Draw or glue on two eyes.
  9. Draw a smiling mouth and add spots if desired.

For an extra Letter D connection, write “D is for Dog” on the back of the finished craft.

This gives children cutting, gluing, painting, and fine motor practice while reinforcing the letter sound they just learned.

You can build an entire Letter D lesson around the free coloring pages without making things complicated.

Try combining them with activities such as making the letter D with play dough, forming D with craft sticks, finding D in magazines, making dots on a large letter D with dot markers, drawing pictures of D words, sorting uppercase and lowercase D cards, or practicing writing D in a sensory tray.

You can even have children choose their favorite D word from the worksheets and draw another picture of it.
