Why Kids Love Memory Matching Games
Memory games are a wonderful combination of learning and play. Children naturally enjoy the excitement of turning over cards and trying to remember where matching pictures are hiding.

- Problem-solving
- Turn-taking
- Patience

Because there are simple rules, even young preschoolers can quickly learn how to play.

Kids learn to pay close attention to where each picture is located, improving concentration and attention span.
Encourages Visual Discrimination
Children practice noticing small differences between pictures, an important skill that also supports reading readiness.
Develops Social Skills
When played with siblings, classmates, or parents, memory games help children practice:
- Taking turns

How to Print Double-Sided Memory Cards
To make your Summer Memory Match Game look polished and last longer, you can print the cards double-sided using the included card back design.
- Print the 5 pages of card fronts (pages 2-6).
- Place the printed pages back into your printer according to your printer’s paper feed instructions.
- Print only the card back page (page 7) on the reverse side, setting Copies to 5.
- Cut out each card along the cutting lines.
Tip: Every printer feeds paper a little differently. Before printing all five pages, test with one sheet to make sure the front and back line up correctly.
Best Printing Tips
For the best results, I recommend:
- Printing on white cardstock (65–110 lb.) for sturdy cards.
- Selecting Actual Size or 100% Scale in your printer settings. Avoid Fit to Page, which can affect alignment.
- Laminating the cards after cutting if you plan to use them over and over.
- Storing the finished cards in a zip-top bag, envelope, or small container to keep all the pieces together.
Using the included card back design gives every card the same appearance on the back, making the game more challenging while creating a professional, store-bought look.
Ways to Make the Game More Challenging
As children become better at matching, try increasing the difficulty.
Ideas include:
- Use all of the cards instead of just a few pairs.
- Set a timer.
- Let children name each object before keeping the match.
- Have children create a sentence using each matched picture.
- Practice beginning sounds using the summer objects.
Summer Learning Skills This Game Supports
This printable naturally reinforces many early childhood skills including:
- Memory
- Matching
- Visual perception
- Vocabulary
- Observation
- Turn-taking
- Concentration
- Fine motor skills while handling the cards
It’s a wonderful addition to any preschool or kindergarten summer learning routine.
Summer Books to Pair With This Activity
Reading a fun summer story before playing the game makes the activity even more engaging.
I recommend:
- The Sandcastle That Lola Built by Megan Maynor
- Pete the Cat: Pete at the Beach by James Dean
- And Then Comes Summer by Tom Brenner
- Curious George Goes to the Beach by Margret & H. A. Rey
- There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Shell! by Lucille Colandro
These stories introduce many of the same summer themes found throughout the memory game.
