Thanksgiving is the perfect time to bring a little creativity into your classroom or homeschool lessons! If you’re looking for a fun, easy Thanksgiving activity that doesn’t require a lot of preparation, I created this free Build a Turkey Craft printable that kids can color, cut, and glue together to make their very own adorable turkey.
This simple Thanksgiving cut and paste craft is perfect for preschoolers, kindergarteners, and early elementary students. With a cute turkey body and seven large feathers to decorate, children can practice important fine motor skills while creating a colorful Thanksgiving decoration.
One of my favorite things about printable crafts is how easy they are to prepare. You don’t need a long list of supplies or complicated instructions. Just print the template, grab some crayons, scissors, and glue, and you’re ready for a fun Thanksgiving activity!
Whether you’re planning a Thanksgiving classroom party, putting together a fall-themed learning center, or looking for a quiet activity to enjoy at home, this build a turkey craft is a wonderful addition to your Thanksgiving plans.
What Is the Build a Turkey Craft Printable?

This free Build a Turkey Craft is a simple coloring and cut and paste activity that allows children to create their own Thanksgiving turkey using a printable template.
I designed this craft to be easy for little hands to work with while still giving children plenty of opportunities to be creative.
The printable includes:
- One adorable turkey body with a face, wings, and feet
- Seven large turkey feathers to color and cut out
- Simple instructions for assembling the turkey
- A black-and-white design so children can choose their own colors
Children can color their turkey using traditional Thanksgiving colors, such as brown, red, orange, and yellow, or get creative with bright rainbow feathers!
Once they’ve finished coloring, they’ll cut out the pieces and glue the feathers behind the turkey’s body.
The result is an adorable Thanksgiving turkey craft that kids can proudly display on a bulletin board, classroom wall, or refrigerator.
Why I Love This Thanksgiving Turkey Craft for Kids
I love creating printable crafts that are not only fun but also give children opportunities to practice important early learning skills.
This Build a Turkey Craft is a great example of how a simple Thanksgiving activity can combine creativity with hands-on learning.
Build Fine Motor Skills
Coloring, cutting, and gluing are wonderful ways for young children to strengthen the small muscles in their hands and fingers.
As children color their turkey feathers, they practice holding and controlling crayons or markers.
Cutting around the large feather shapes also gives them an opportunity to develop scissor skills and hand-eye coordination.
For younger preschoolers who are still learning to use scissors, an adult can help cut out the pieces while children focus on coloring and assembling their turkeys.
Encourage Creativity and Color Recognition
One of the best parts of this printable turkey craft is that every turkey can look different!
Children can choose traditional fall colors or create a bright, colorful turkey using their favorite shades.
You can also use the feathers to practice color recognition by asking questions such as:
- Can you color one feather red?
- Which feather is orange?
- Can you find two feathers that are the same color?
- What happens when you use different colors on each feather?
These simple questions turn an ordinary coloring activity into an opportunity for learning.
Practice Counting and Early Math Skills
Since the printable includes seven feathers, it’s easy to add a little counting practice to this Thanksgiving craft.
Before assembling their turkey, encourage children to count each feather aloud.
You can also ask them to sort their feathers by color or arrange them in a repeating pattern.
For example, children might alternate red and yellow feathers or create a pattern using orange, brown, and green.
These small additions make the activity especially useful for preschool and kindergarten math centers.
Encourage Independence and Following Directions
Printable crafts are a wonderful way to help children practice following simple, step-by-step directions.
With this Build a Turkey Craft, children work through three main tasks: coloring, cutting, and gluing.
Older preschoolers and kindergarteners may be able to complete most of the craft independently, while younger children can work with a little assistance.
I especially like crafts that have a clear finished project because children can see the results of their hard work!

- Free Build a Turkey Craft printable (download below)
- White printer paper or cardstock
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Child-safe scissors
- Glue stick or school glue

How to Make Your Build a Turkey Craft
This easy Thanksgiving turkey craft takes just a few steps and is perfect for children who enjoy coloring and creating their own decorations.
Step 1: Print the Free Turkey Craft Template
Start by downloading and printing the free Build a Turkey Craft template on white printer paper or cardstock.
The printable includes the turkey body and seven separate feathers on one activity page.
Make sure you print the page at its actual size so the pieces are easy for children to color and cut.
Step 2: Color the Turkey and Feathers
Next, let children color the turkey body and all seven feathers.
For a traditional Thanksgiving turkey, children can color the body brown, the beak yellow or orange, and the wattle red.
The feathers can be decorated with fall colors such as:
- Red
- Orange
- Yellow
- Brown
- Green
- Purple
- Blue
Children can also make a rainbow turkey or decorate each feather with their own patterns and designs.
Stripes, polka dots, and colorful shapes are all fun ways to personalize the craft!
Step 3: Cut Out the Turkey Pieces
Once everything is colored, carefully cut around the outside edges of the turkey body and each feather.
The large feather shapes make this a great cutting activity for children who are developing their scissor skills.
Younger children may need help cutting around the curved edges.
Encourage children to take their time and follow the black outlines as closely as they can.
Step 4: Arrange the Turkey Feathers
Before gluing, have children arrange their seven feathers in a fan shape behind the turkey’s body.
The rounded ends should extend outward, while the pointed ends meet behind the body.
This is a great opportunity to let children experiment with different color arrangements.
They can create a rainbow pattern, alternate colors, or arrange the feathers however they like.
Step 5: Glue the Turkey Together

Once the feathers are arranged, glue the pointed ends to the back of the turkey’s body.
Make sure the feathers are spread out so they can be seen around the turkey’s head and sides.
Allow the glue to dry completely before picking up or displaying the finished craft.
Your adorable Build a Turkey Craft is complete!
Fun Ways to Use This Thanksgiving Cut and Paste Craft
One of the reasons I love printable activities is that they can be used in so many different ways.
This Thanksgiving turkey craft is no exception!
Thanksgiving Classroom Bulletin Board

Turn your students’ finished turkeys into a colorful Thanksgiving bulletin board.
You could use a fun heading such as:
“Thankful Little Turkeys!”
Display each child’s turkey with their name underneath.
Since every student can choose their own feather colors, you’ll have a bulletin board full of unique and colorful turkeys.
Thanksgiving Craft Center
Add the printed templates to your Thanksgiving classroom craft center along with crayons, scissors, and glue sticks.
Students can complete their turkeys during independent work time, small groups, or classroom rotations.
For younger students, you can prepare some of the pieces ahead of time to make the activity easier.
Thanksgiving Party Activity
If you’re planning a classroom Thanksgiving celebration, this Build a Turkey Craft makes a fun, inexpensive party activity.
Simply print enough templates for everyone and set up a craft table with coloring supplies.
Children can take their finished turkeys home as a little Thanksgiving keepsake.
Thanksgiving Homeschool Activity
For homeschooling families, this craft is an easy way to include a hands-on project in a Thanksgiving-themed learning day.
You can combine it with a picture book, a turkey counting activity, or a simple discussion about Thanksgiving traditions.
It also makes a nice activity for younger children while older students work on their own lessons.
More Learning Activities to Try With Your Build a Turkey Craft
If you’d like to turn this simple craft into a more complete Thanksgiving learning experience, here are a few additional ideas.
Turkey Feather Counting

Before gluing the feathers onto the turkey, have children count all seven pieces.
Ask them to place the feathers in a row and touch each one as they count.
You can also remove a few feathers and ask children how many are left.
For older students, use the feathers to practice simple addition and subtraction problems.
Turkey Feather Patterns
Use the feathers to introduce or review simple patterns.
Children can create patterns such as:
- Red, yellow, red, yellow
- Orange, green, orange, green
- Red, orange, yellow, red, orange, yellow
Once they’ve created their pattern, they can glue the feathers onto their turkey in that order.
What Am I Thankful For?

Turn your turkey craft into a simple gratitude activity.
Before gluing the feathers onto the turkey, ask children to think about the people, places, and things they’re thankful for.
They can write one thing they’re thankful for on each feather or ask an adult to help them write their answers.
Younger children can draw small pictures on the feathers instead.
This is a sweet way to combine a Thanksgiving craft with a meaningful discussion about gratitude.
Turkey Color Sorting
Before assembling the turkey, invite children to sort their feathers into different color groups.
You can ask them which colors they used the most, which they used the least, and whether any colors appear more than once.
This is an easy way to introduce comparison and sorting skills.
Thanksgiving Picture Books to Read With Your Turkey Craft
I love pairing printable crafts with picture books because they give children an opportunity to connect what they’re creating with a story.
If you’re planning a Thanksgiving unit, here are a few turkey-themed books that would pair wonderfully with this activity.
Turkey Trouble by Wendi Silvano
In Turkey Trouble, Turkey knows Thanksgiving is approaching, and he comes up with some hilarious disguises to avoid becoming Thanksgiving dinner.
This funny story is a great choice for preschool and elementary students.
After reading, children can create their own turkey craft and talk about which disguise was their favorite.
How to Catch a Turkey by Adam Wallace and Andy Elkerton
How to Catch a Turkey follows a turkey that gets loose during a school Thanksgiving play, leading to a funny chase.
This book is perfect for encouraging creativity and problem-solving.
After reading, ask children how they would catch a turkey before making their own colorful craft.
A Turkey for Thanksgiving by Eve Bunting
In A Turkey for Thanksgiving, Mrs. Moose wants a real turkey at her Thanksgiving dinner, but the turkey is understandably worried!
This sweet story has a fun twist and offers an opportunity to talk about friendship, kindness, and Thanksgiving.
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Turkey! by Lucille Colandro
This silly Thanksgiving story follows the Old Lady as she swallows a turkey and several other unusual items.
Children will enjoy the repetitive text and funny illustrations.
Pair the story with your turkey craft for a fun Thanksgiving read-aloud activity.
These books are wonderful additions to a Thanksgiving classroom library or homeschool reading basket.
You can also find turkey-themed picture books and other Thanksgiving favorites through my Amazon recommendations.

Tips for Making This Turkey Craft With Preschoolers and Kindergarteners
If you’re using this printable with younger children, a little preparation can make the activity easier and more enjoyable.
For preschoolers: Consider cutting out the turkey body ahead of time and letting children practice cutting the larger feather shapes. You can also focus on coloring, counting, and identifying the different feather colors.
For kindergarteners: Encourage children to color and cut their own pieces, count all seven feathers, and arrange them in a pattern before gluing.
For first and second graders: Add a writing activity by asking children to write a few sentences about their turkey or explain what they’re thankful for.
If you’re working with a larger classroom group, I recommend printing the templates ahead of time and keeping extra copies available in case children want to start over or make another turkey.
