Learning about apples is one of those activities that fits beautifully into fall learning. Apples are familiar to young children, easy to explore in real life, and perfect for introducing simple science vocabulary.
I created this free parts of an apple worksheet to give preschool and kindergarten children a hands-on way to learn what is inside an apple while also practicing cutting, matching, and vocabulary skills. Instead of simply looking at a diagram, children cut out each word and paste it beside the correct part of the apple.
The printable includes both a black-and-white version and a full-color version, so you can choose the one that works best for your classroom, homeschool lesson, science center, or fall activity.
Free Parts of an Apple Worksheet
This simple apple labeling activity introduces children to six basic parts of an apple:
- Seed
- Skin
- Stem
- Core
- Flesh
- Leaf
The large apple diagram makes each part easy for young learners to see. Children cut apart the six vocabulary labels at the bottom of the page and paste each word into the correct box.
I especially like activities like this because they combine several skills into one printable. Children aren’t only learning science vocabulary. They’re also reading or recognizing words, using scissors, matching information, and practicing fine motor skills.
What’s Included in the Parts of an Apple Printable?
I’ve kept this free printable intentionally simple so it can be used with younger learners without making the lesson feel overwhelming.
The download includes two versions of the parts of an apple worksheet.
Black-and-White Apple Worksheet
The black-and-white version is perfect when you want children to add a little creativity to the activity.
Before labeling the apple, children can color the skin, leaf, stem, seeds, flesh, and core. You could even cut open a real apple first and encourage children to use it as a reference when choosing their colors.
Color Parts of an Apple Worksheet
I’ve also included a color version of the same activity. This is a great option for science centers, homeschool lessons, or days when you want an activity that requires less preparation.
The apple is already colored, but children still cut out and match all six vocabulary words to complete the diagram.
What Are the Parts of an Apple?
Before children complete their worksheet, spend a few minutes talking about each part of an apple.
The skin is the thin outer covering that protects the apple. Underneath the skin is the flesh, which is the part we usually eat. In the center is the core, where the seeds are found.
At the top of the apple is the stem, which once connected the apple to the tree. Apples may also have a leaf attached to or near the stem.
For preschool and kindergarten learners, I would keep the explanation simple. The goal isn’t to turn apple snack time into a university botany course. It’s to help children begin connecting the vocabulary on the page with something they can actually see and touch.
Turn Your Parts of an Apple Worksheet Into a Simple Science Lesson
One of the easiest ways to make this printable more meaningful is to pair it with a real apple.
Before handing out the worksheet, show children a whole apple. Ask them what parts they can already identify. They may quickly notice the skin and stem, while the inside parts create a little more curiosity.
Next, cut the apple in half so children can see the flesh, core, and seeds.
You can point to each part and say its name before children begin their worksheets. If you’re teaching a small group, children can take turns finding the different parts.
Then bring out the printable and see how many parts they can recognize on the illustration.
That simple transition from real apple → apple diagram → vocabulary word can help make an abstract labeling activity much easier to understand.
How to Use the Parts of an Apple Worksheet
Print the worksheet on regular US Letter paper. If you’re using the black-and-white version, children can color their apples first.
Have children carefully cut along the dotted lines around the six vocabulary cards.
Next, they can look at each line on the apple diagram and decide which word belongs in the corresponding box. Once they’re confident about their answers, they can glue the labels into place.
For children who aren’t reading independently yet, read each word aloud and let them identify the correct part of the apple. You could also work through the first few labels together and let them finish the remaining ones independently.
Apple Vocabulary for Preschool and Kindergarten
A parts of an apple worksheet is also an easy way to introduce science vocabulary without requiring a lengthy lesson.
Try saying each word together before beginning the activity. You can also point to the printed word and then find the matching part on a real apple.
For an extra literacy connection, ask children questions such as, “What sound does seed begin with?” or “Can you find the word that begins with L?”
Kindergarten children who are ready for more can choose one or two vocabulary words and use them in a sentence.
These tiny extensions can turn one printable into science, vocabulary, beginning sounds, handwriting, and fine motor practice without needing five separate worksheets.
Apple Books to Read With This Activity
A picture book can help turn your free parts of an apple worksheet into a more complete apple-themed lesson. Here are several books you can look for at your library or pair with your activity using your favorite bookseller:

For a science-focused lesson, I would choose a nonfiction apple book first. If you want to continue the theme afterward, a fun apple story can make a nice transition into your craft or another activity.
Easy Paper Plate Apple Craft
After children have examined a real apple and completed their parts of an apple worksheet, an apple paper plate craft is an easy way to continue the theme.
For this craft, you’ll need a paper plate, red crayons or washable paint, brown and green construction paper, scissors, and glue.
Have children color or paint the paper plate red. Cut a small brown rectangle for the stem and a simple green leaf shape. Glue the stem to the back of the top of the plate and add the green leaf beside it.
You could also cut the plate into an apple shape before decorating it, or leave the plate round for an easier preschool version.
Once the craft is finished, ask children to identify the skin, stem, and leaf. Compare the craft with a real apple and the worksheet to see which parts are visible on the outside and which parts can only be seen after an apple is cut open.
