Free Printable Mermaid Coloring Page

Are you looking for a free mermaid coloring page? You’ve come to the right place!

When my daughter was younger she loved coloring mermaids and I can understand why. Mermaids are mysterious and magical, and children love everything about them. The fact that their tails transform into human legs is often used as a metaphor for the transition from childhood to adulthood.

That is one of the reasons I enjoy creating mermaid coloring pages, it was a way to introduce my daughter to the ocean and all its wonders. But since mermaids are also half-human, I feel it’s a good way for her to learn about the creatures that live on land as well.

The Story of Mermaids

The story of mermaids, like mermaids themselves, is often told in different ways. The most common story goes like this: once upon a time there was a beautiful young human maiden who fell in love with the prince of her kingdom. She longed to be with him day and night, but she could never become one of us because she comes from the sea.

Desperation makes her take a knife and make a wish to the Ocean, who was able to hear her plea. She begged him to turn her tail into two beautiful human legs that she could use to walk on land with the prince.

This is how mermaids are born, half-human half-fish creatures with long tails that can turn into legs when they come on land. In the process of the transformation, mermaids lose their ability to swim and have a fear of water that can only be cured if they fall in love with a human being again.

The other version tells us about how mermaids are born when an old witch turns a young woman into one of them after she refuses to marry the old man her father chose for her. The witch punishes her by forcing her to live in the sea and only allowing her legs to turn into a tail when she falls in love with a man from the land, who will be allowed to see it.

Why do kids love mermaids?

Nothing appeals to a child more than the thought of an exciting and somewhat dangerous adventure. Mermaids typically live in the depths of the ocean, where there is plenty to discover and explore. Kids love that mermaids are constantly on the move, unlike people who spend most of their time walking around on land.

Mermaids are also mysterious is more exciting than discovering the world around you, and mermaids offer little children immediate access to it. Even though they spend most of their time underwater, they are still every bit as interesting as humans.

The fact that there is so much mystery surrounding them makes it even better for kids to fantasize about. Mermaid tails look like something from a science fiction movie, and most mermaid stories begin with the characters being found by humans. Mermaids have been known to be shy around people, but they can also be very curious about them as well.

The perfect combination of a life on land and at sea is what makes mermaids so popular among kids of all ages. When most people think about mermaids, they often envision them as beautiful women that live in the sea. Mermaid stories usually involve someone falling in love with one of these girls and eventually marrying her.

It’s not just their looks that appeal to kids though, most mermaids also have a talent for singing and playing musical instruments. Their songs are often enchanting, and they often make it their goal to lure sailors to the rocks. Kids love this part of mermaids as well, as singing is one of those things that everyone loves to do.
