Winter doesn’t have to mean staying cooped up indoors! With a little creativity, you can transform those chilly days into memorable moments of exploration, learning, and fun. With a winter scavenger hunt you can use the cold weather to teacher your young ones about nature, science, and the great outdoors. I have created a free winter scavenger hunt printable that you can download and use with your kids or students.

What is a Scavenger Hunt?

Free Winter Scavenger Hunt Printable

A scavenger hunt is a game where players are given a list of items to find in a specific setting. The goal is to locate all the items on the list within a set time limit. It’s a great way to encourage kids to explore their surroundings, use their problem-solving skills, and work together as a team.

One thing I love about scavenger hunts is that they can be adapted for any age group and setting. Whether you’re in a park, a backyard, or even inside your home on a rainy day, there’s always something to discover.

Why Do a Winter Scavenger Hunt?

Winter can often feel like a season where we just want to hibernate indoors. Especially if you live in a cold state such as myself, it can be easy to fall into a routine of staying indoors and watching TV or playing video games. But with a winter scavenger hunt, you can add some excitement and adventure to your child’s day.

Not only does a winter scavenger hunt get kids moving and exploring, but it also teaches them about the season and the natural world around them. They’ll learn about different types of animals, plants, and weather patterns specific to winter. It’s a great way to incorporate education into playtime without your child even realizing it!

How to Use the Winter Scavenger Hunt Printable

First, download and print out the free winter scavenger hunt printable by entering your email in the form below. I have created two designs to choose from. One in color and one in black and white (to be colored).

I have also included a set of 12 matching cards that can be hidden if you want to make this a seek the cards indoors rather than a find the items scavenger hunt. This can add an extra level of difficulty to the game for older children.

Next, gather all necessary supplies such as pens, crayons, or pencils to check off items, and any additional tools that may be needed depending on your chosen location.

Decide on a time limit for the scavenger hunt and make sure all participants are aware of it.

You can also choose to have prizes for whoever finds all the items first, or simply make it a fun activity without any winners or losers.

Finally, let the scavenger hunt begin! Encourage teamwork and communication among participants as they search for the items on the list.

Take breaks if needed and make sure to have fun while exploring and learning about winter.

Ideas for Using the Free Winter Scavenger Hunt

  • Have a family competition: Split into teams and see who can find all the items first. The winning team gets to choose a fun winter activity for the whole family to do together.
  • Add some outdoor challenges: Along with finding the items on the list, incorporate some physical challenges such as building a snowman or making a snow angel.
  • Make it a selfie scavenger hunt: Have the kids take a picture with each item on the list and create a winter-themed photo collage afterwards.
  • Take it indoors: If going outside isn’t an option, adapt the scavenger hunt to be done inside. Hide certain items around the house for your child to find and add in some winter-themed objects like hot cocoa or mittens.
