Sharing is caring!

The new school year brings excitement, nervous energy, and endless possibilities! Whether you’re planning an open house event or looking for a perfect first-day activity, a back-to-school scavenger hunt is exactly what you need to transform those jittery feelings into pure fun.

This engaging activity helps students explore their new classroom environment while breaking the ice with classmates and teachers. Best of all, I’ve created a completely free printable that’s ready to download and use right away!

Why Your Students Will Love a Back-to-School Scavenger Hunt

Familiarizing Students with the Classroom

New classrooms can feel overwhelming for children of all ages. A scavenger hunt transforms this potentially stressful experience into an exciting adventure! Students naturally explore every corner of their learning space while searching for items on their list.

This hands-on exploration helps children:

  • Locate important classroom items like their cubbies, desks, books, and supplies.
  • Discover where materials are stored for future independent use
  • Feel comfortable moving around their new environment
  • Reduce anxiety about unfamiliar surroundings

When students actively participate in discovering their classroom layout, they develop confidence and ownership of their learning space from day one.

Perfect Activity for Open House or First Day of School

Open house events can be chaotic, with parents and students milling around uncertain of what to do next. A back-to-school scavenger hunt provides structure and purpose to these gatherings!

For open house events, this activity:

  • Keeps children engaged while parents speak with teachers
  • Encourages family participation and bonding
  • Creates natural conversation starters between families
  • Provides a memorable positive first impression of the classroom

On the first day of school, scavenger hunts serve as excellent icebreakers that:

  • Help students learn each other’s names through teamwork
  • Reduce first-day jitters with purposeful movement
  • Create shared experiences that build classroom community
  • Allow teachers to observe student interactions and personalities

  • color with words
  • color with no words
  • black and white with words
  • black and white with no words

As an added bonus, I have included a set of matching cards and optional card backing for the scavenger hunt. These cards can be used as visual aids during the hunt or for additional activities throughout the school year.

How to Use Your Back-to-School Scavenger Hunt

  1. Download and print the scavenger hunt of your choice.
  2. Cut out the matching cards, if desired.
  3. Place the cards around your classroom or school in various locations.
  4. Give each student a copy of the scavenger hunt worksheet.
  5. Have students work individually or in pairs to find and match each item on their worksheet with its corresponding card.
  6. Encourage students to use descriptive language as they search for each item (e.g. “I found a pencil sharpener near the teacher’s desk”).
  7. Once all items have been found and matched, review as a class and discuss any interesting observations or connections made during the hunt.
  8. Keep the matching cards and scavenger hunt worksheets for future use, or create a new one with different items to keep the activity fresh.

More Back-to-School Activities to Try

If you like this scavenger hunt activity, here are a few more ideas to try out with your students:

  • All About Me Worksheets – Use these worksheets to help students introduce themselves to the class and get to know each other better.
  • Classroom Rules Poster – Have students work together to create a poster of classroom rules that everyone agrees on and will follow throughout the school year.
  • Get-to-Know-You Bingo – Create a bingo board with prompts such as “has a pet,” “has traveled outside of the country,” or “plays a musical instrument.” Students can walk around and find classmates who fit each prompt, filling in their bingo board as they go.
  • Back-to-school crafts – Have students create a craft that represents something they are looking forward to or excited about for the upcoming school year. This could be a paper pencil holder, decorated notebook cover, or personalized locker decoration.
  • Back-to-school books – Have students bring in their favorite back-to-school themed book (like “The Recess Queen” or “Quiet Please, Owen McPhee!”) to share with the class. This could be a picture book for younger students or a chapter book for older students. Students can take turns reading excerpts from their chosen book and discuss why they enjoy it.
