Scarecrow Craft Instructions

Start by printing the template for the scarecrow you want to make — pick the boy or the girl version, and choose color or black & white depending on whether you want a quick project or a coloring activity first.

If you printed the black-and-white version, let kids color the pieces using crayons, markers, or colored pencils. Keep the coloring simple for preschoolers and more detailed for older kids.

Carefully cut out each piece of the template. For younger children you may wish to pre-cut the pieces or use safety scissors and supervise closely.

Lay out the pieces on a flat surface and decide which parts go where. Begin by placing the head and body pieces, then add the hat, arms, and legs so you can see how everything will fit.

Use a glue stick or school glue to attach each piece in place. Press gently and hold for a few seconds on each seam to make sure pieces stick, especially if you used cardstock.

Add finishing touches like straw hair (cut thin strips of paper), patches on the clothes, or draw-on details such as buttons and a smile. If you want it to be a puppet, glue a popsicle stick to the back or place the finished scarecrow on a small paper bag.

Display your finished scarecrow on a bulletin board, use it in a fall-themed dramatic play center, or string several together to make a garland — so many cute decorating possibilities!
